إيمان الناس بقدرة التكنولوجيا على إيجاد الحلول لكل مشاكلنا، هو المرادف النفسي الحديث لإيمان أجدادنا بالمعجزات والأولياء والقديسين. قصص المخلِّص الموعود والحياة بعد الموت إستُبدِلت بقصص الخيال العلمي واستعمار المريخ وتجميد البشر وإعادة إحياءهم بالمستقبل. مثلًا؛ حتى عام 2014، تم تجميد جثث 146 شخص في الولايات المتحدة بعد وفاتهم والإحتفاظ بها بمخازن خاصة أملًا في أنّ العلم سيكون قادرًا على إعادة إحياءهم في المستقبل. قارن هذا بالمصريين القدماء وهم يضعون عبيدهم ومجوهراتهم وممتلكاتهم معهم في قبورهم.
هذا النوع من التفكير هو أمل زائف بمستقبل أفضل بدون بذل جهد لتحقيقه، وهو إستجابة لرغبة الإنسان النفسية حتى يؤمن بعالم آخر مثالي مختلف عن عالمنا، وبمستقبل مثالي غير قابل للتحقيق.
