إن المناطق العديدة المختلفة في الدماغ ترتبط ببعضها بعضًا بوساطة ألياف تدعى "المادة البيضاء" يبلغ طولها الإجمالي نحو 160 ألف كيلومتر، أي ما يعادل 4 أضعاف محيط الأرض. ولأول مرة، كشفت هذه الصورة الملتقطة في مركز "مارتينوس للتصوير الطبي الحيوي" عن المسالك المحدّدة التي تكمن وراء الوظائف المعرفية للدماغ. فالحُزم ذوات اللونين الزهري والبرتقالي (يمين، الصورة) مثلًا تنقل الإشارات المهمة الخاصة باللغة.

المادة الرمادية بالدماغ grey matter تحتوي على "أجسام" الخلايا العصبية وكومة خلايا مساعدة ثانية... هاي المادة تكون موجودة بقشرة الدماغ (بالمنطقة الخارجية منه) وبالأنوية Nuclei الموجودة بالجهاز العصبي.

المادة البيضاء white matter تتكون بالغالب من الياف عصبية (وايرات) هي عبارة عن بروزات axons تمتد من اجسام الخلايا العصبية بالمادة الرمادية حتى تربطهن بخلايا ثانية بالمناطق الاخرى من الدماغ أو تطلع من الجهاز العصبي وتصير أعصاب وتربطها بالعضلات.

EXPECTATIONS ALSO SHAPE stereotypes. A stereotype, after all, is a way of categorizing information, in the hope of pre­ dicting experiences. The brain cannot start from scratch at every new situation. It must build on what it has seen before.
For that reason, stereotypes are not intrinsically malevolent.
They provide shortcuts in our never-ending attempt to make sense of complicated surroundings. This is why we have the expectation that an elderly person will need help using a com­ puter or that a student at Harvard will be intelligent.* But because a stereotype provides us with spécifie expectations about members of a group, it can also unfavorably influence both our perceptions and our behavior.
