الوجودية تسمت بهذا الإسم لأنها تقدم الوجود existence على الجوهر أو المعنى essence.
الفلاسفة من أمثال أفلاطون جانوا يعتبرون أن الجوهر أو المعنى هو الأصل (أفلاطون جان يؤمن بوجود عالم المُثل اللي تتواجد بيه الأفكار المثالية لله ومنها يضيف الله -او الآلهة- الوجود على المعنى)
سارتر نفى هذا الشي نفي قاطع، وأعلن أنه العالم بلا معنى أو جوهر... واللي موجود هو فقط الوجود existence. العالم بلا معنى، والحياة مالها هدف نهائي... ومن هاي الفلسفة العدمية ينطلق سارتر وينطي شعاع أمل بأن الإنسان حر بأن يضيف معنى للعالم بكيفه. وبأن يصنع هدفه بالحياة مثل ما يريد... فـ "الإنسان مجبور أن يكون حراً" مثل ما جان يكول
