I think the buddhists have something similar to Meditatio Mortis where a monk would sit alone in a room with a corpse and meditate the impermanence of it all
Temple dedicated for Maraแน‡asati meditation, with stuffed animals and human heads hanging from the rafters. The photo was taken by Leslie Weir in Tangna, Tibet, in ca. 1930.

โ€œUnsolvedโ€
Thomas Edwin Mostyn
We knew from our reading of great literature that Love involved Suffering, and would happily have got in some practice at Suffering if there was an implicit, perhaps even logical, promise that Love might be on its way.
This was another of our fears: that Life wouldnโ€™t turn out to be like Literature. Look at our parentsโ€”were they the stuff of Literature? At best, they might aspire to the condition of onlookers and bystanders, part of a social backdrop against which real, true, important things could happen. Like what? The things Literature was all about: love, sex, morality, friendship, happiness, suffering, betrayal, adultery, good and evil, heroes and villains, guilt and innocence, ambition, power, justice, revolution, war, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, the individual against society, success and failure, murder, suicide, death, God.

โ€” The Sense of an Ending, by Julian Barnes
We live with such easy assumptions, donโ€™t we? For instance, that memory equals events plus time. But itโ€™s all much odder than this. Who was it said that memory is what we thought weโ€™d forgotten? And it ought to be obvious to us that time doesnโ€™t act as a fixative, rather as a solvent. But itโ€™s not convenientโ€”itโ€™s not usefulโ€”to believe this; it doesnโ€™t help us get on with our lives; so we ignore it.

Yes, of course we were pretentiousโ€”what else is youth for? We used terms like โ€œWeltanschauungโ€ and โ€œSturm und Drang,โ€ enjoyed saying โ€œThatโ€™s philosophically self-evident,โ€ and assured one another that the imaginationโ€™s first duty was to be transgressive. Our parents saw things differently, picturing their children as innocents suddenly exposed to noxious influence.
