فكر بالمسألة هيج: لما راتبك هو مليون دينار بالشهر، فإنت رح تحتاج مليون بالشهر أو شوية أقل حتى تعيش. بس لما يصعد راتبك ويصير مليونين، انت ما رح تبقى تصرف مليون بالشهر والمليون الإضافي تضمه. لا، انت رح تصرف مليونين بالشهر لأن صارت عندك فلوس أكثر حتى تصرفها؛ كلما تزيد فلوسك، كلما تزيد حاجتك للفلوس.

الفكرة نفسها تنطبق على إنتاج الطاقة: لما نخترع وسيلة جديدة لإنتاج الطاقة أو نحسن وسائل إنتاج الطاقة الحالية، فهالشي رح يزيد إحتياجات الطاقة مالتنا بدل ما ينقصها؛ كلما ننتج وسيلة طاقة جديدة، كلما رح نحتاج طاقة أكثر.

المعضلة هاي مهمة كلش لأن كلما نخترع وسيلة جديدة للطاقة ونعتقد أنها "بديل نظيف" للوقود الأُحفوري مثلًا، هي ما رح تكون بديل بالحقيقة، هي رح تكون إضافة للوقود الأُحفوري ورح نصرف طاقة أكثر. لهذا إختراعات الطاقة النظيفة وإيجاد وسائل جديدة لإنتاج الطاقة رح يزيد حاجتنا للطاقة بدل أنْ يخلينا نترك الوقود الأُحفوري.

اليوم الدكتور جان يسولف، يكول قبلما يدخل الـ MRI للعراق جنة نشخص بدونه والحياة ماشية. ورة شهر من دخول الـ MRI صارت قائمة الإنتظار بيه توصل لـ 5 أشهر وكلها تريد تستخدمه.
الفكرة هي أنّ أي تكنولوجيا جديدة رح تتحول من كونها إضافة وبديل غير أساسي إلى وسيلة أساسية للحياة. لهذا يُقال أنّ «مِن سُنَن التاريخ أنّ الرفاهيات تتحول إلى ضروريات».
