Wherever information is very easy to obtain, as is the case today, the social system switches from trust to control. The society of transparency is not a society of trust, but a society of control.

Transparency makes the human being glassy. The digital society of control makes intensive use of freedom. It is only possible thanks to voluntary self-illumination and self-exposure. It exploits freedom. The society of control achieves perfection when its inhabitants do not communicate because of external constraint but out of inner needโ€”that is, when the fear of giving up a private and intimate sphere yields to the need to put oneself on display shamelessly.
In the society of exhibition, every subject is also its own advertising object. Everything is measured by its exhibition value. The society of exhibition is a society of pornography. Everything has been turned outward, stripped, exposed, undressed, and put on show. The excess of display turns everything into a commodity; possessing โ€œno secret,โ€ it stands โ€œdoomed . . . to immediate devouring.โ€
A part even of the persons closest to us must be offered in the form of ambiguity and opacity for their attraction to remain elevated for us. Fantasy is essential for the economy of pleasure. An object offered bare turns it off. Only the withdrawal and concealment of the object kindles it.

The author makes a distinction between countenance (ุงู„ุทูŽู„ุนุฉุŒ ุงู„ู…ุญูŠู‘ุง) vs face (ุงู„ูˆุฌู‡)
The countenance is alive and radiating. It acts like a mask, holding secrets behind every gesture of it. It indicates the existence of a soul and is the gateway to an unknown world; the inner workings of a human being. It has no exhibition value, because it conceals rather than expose.

The face is without any secret, it shows nothing but its showing-itself. It hides nothing and expresses nothing. It has become transparent, so to speak. It's an object of exhibition, like the faces you see on billboards; they are synthetic and their gestures are transparent and do not indicates a soul underneath. Their only value is an exhibition value.
