ليس هناك شكٌ أنّ الغريزة الدينية (رغبةُ الإنسان بعبادةِ شيءٍ ما) جزءٌ لا ينفصل عن جوهر الإنسان، إذ لا ولَم توجد حضارةٌ أو شعبٌ أو قبيلةٌ معزولة في أقصى الأرض إلا ولها نظامٌ من المعتقدات الدينية. لكن لِمَ الإنسان وحده، دون غيره من المخلوقات، هو مَن يملك هذه الغريزة؟
ربما السببُ هو وعيُ المرءِ بذاتِه وبالعالَم. أنْ يعي المرء ذاتَه يعني أنْ يعرِف الحد الذي ينتهي عنده وجودُه ويبدأ وجودُ العالَم. عندها يُدرك المرء صِغَر وجودِه وضآلة حجمِه مقارنةً بحجم العالَم. هذا الشعورُ بمدى وضاعتنا له بالضرورةِ وجهٌ آخر معاكسٌ له هو الشعور بمدى عظمةِ الوجود بالمقارنة ومدى جهلِنا به. إنّ الغريزة الدينية هي في جوهرها إعترافٌ بتواضع الإنسان وبعظمةِ ما يجهلُه. ما يتبع هذا الإعترافَ هو عبادةٌ لهذا اللغز العظيم المجهول تحت مسمياتٍ مختلفة وصورٍ متباينة.

*حرقةُ المعدة كانَت لقرون تُعالَج بأكل كميات قليلة (وليس 100 كيلوغرام) من الأصداف المطحونة أو المحروقة أو الطباشير، لأنها كلها تحتوي على كاربونات الكالسيوم.
