Bronze is a copper & tin alloy, usually in 88% to 12% composition. Sometimes tin can be replaced with arsenic, but it creates toxic fumes in production.

Brass is a copper & zinc alloy with a 66% to 34% composition. Sometimes small amounts of aluminum or tin are added to make it resistant to corrosion (aluminum forms Al2O3 which creates a transparent thin layer that protects the alloy surface).

Copper and silver have been known since ancient times to be anti-bacterials. People used to throw brass or silver coins in their water containers to disinfect them.

سابقًا جان الإعتقاد الشائع هو أنّ الجسم يحتوي 4 سوائل أو أخلاط مختلفة¹ هي الدم والبلغم phlegm والمادة الصفراء yellow bile والمادة السوداء melancholia، وأنّ هاي الأخلاط تتواجد بنسبة معينة تضمن صحة الجسم والعقل، وإذا تغيّرت نسبتها فهذا رح يؤدي لأمراض جسدية مختلفة². حتى شخصيات ومزاجات الناس، جانت تُفسَّر على أنها بسبب زيادة وحدة من الأخلاط على حساب الباقيات؛ السوداء مثلًا لما تزيد رح تسبب الاكتئاب والكسل، ولهذا لحد الآن، الكلمة اللي توصف الحزن والاكتئاب بهواي لغات أوروبية هي Melancholy اللي هي نفسها الكلمة لـ "المادة السوداء." أصلًا كلمة humor اللي تدل على حس الفكاهة والتحشيش، معناها بالأصل "سائل،" بمعنى أنّ حس الفكاهة عند الشخص جاي من توازن نسبة السوائل الأربعة بجسمه (الدم يُعتبر هو المسؤول عن الإنشراح والنشاط والفكاهة).


¹يسموها نظرية الأخلاط humoral theory وجانت هي النظرية الأساسية بالطب لقرون طويلة، من زمن اليونانيين وصولًا إلى الطب العربي الإسلامي ولحد عصر النهضة تقريبًا.
²الفصد bloodletting هو علاج قديم جان منتشر بأوروبا وآسيا، وجذوره ترجع لهاي النظرية نفسها. فكرته هي "التخلص من الدم الزائد/الفاسد عن طريق جرح الوريد." والحجامة همين فكرتها مشابهة.
