Health depended upon temperance and wisdom, or proper self-control. فَالفِكرُ اليوناني شَدَّدَ ورَكَّزَ على الأرضية المشتركة بين الفلسفةِ والطب والأخلاق، والتي ستصير في العصورِ اللاحقة حقولًا معرفيةً منفصلةً عن بعضِها. فالصحّة تعتمد على الإعتدال والحِكمة، أو ترويضِ النفس. فالصحةُ الجسدية، والتي يَنعَمُ بها المرء عبر الإعتدال في المأكل والمَشرَب والجنس والرياضة، هي الأساس والنموذج للتفكيرِ الصحيح (في اليونانية sōphrosynē، أيْ سلامَةُ العَقل).
Philosophy should promote medicine, Galen taught, though the physician must master philosophy-logic (the discipline of thinking), physics (the science of nature), and ethics (the science of action). Philosophy and medicine were thus counterparts: the best doctor was also a philosopher, while the unphilosophical healer (the Empiric) was like an architect without a plan.

What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm? An idea. Resilient... highly contagious. Once an idea has taken hold of the brain it's almost impossible to eradicate. An idea that is fully formed - fully understood - that sticks; right in there somewhere.
