يُقال أنّ المعري لما فرِغ من تصنيف اللامع العزيزي في شرح شِعر المتنبي وقُرِئ عليه أخذ الجماعة في وصفه، فقال أبو العلاء (وهو أعمى)، كأنما [المتنبي] نظَرَ إلي بلَحظِ الغيب حيث قال:

بالمناسبة يُقال أنّ المعري شارح ديوان المتنبي مرتين، مرة بكتاب سماه (اللامع العزيزي) والثانية بكتاب سماه (معجز أحمد) لأن المتنبي ادّعى النبوة (ولهذا إسمه "المتنبي")، فديوانه صار بمنزلة معجزته: مثلما القرآن هو معجزة النبي محمد، فالشِعر هو معجزة المتنبي.
