Roger Guillemin thought that we have inherited many automatic mechanisms from very simple organisms, from our evolutionary ancestors.
But what was good for them is not absolutely good for much more complicated organisms like us. A good example is phagocytosis, it is inherited from unicellular organisms. For amoeba, it is an almost perfect kind of defense.
For multicellular organisms, it is not so perfect because of decay products and reactive oxygen species created by phagocytes. These products will be excreted by phagocytes and they will harm the neighboring cells of the multicellular organism. Roger Guillemin called this "evolutionary opportunism"

علمود تعوّض عن فقدان الهيموغلوبين، هالأسماك طوّرت وسائل للتكيف: قلوبها صارت أكبر وأقوى حتى تضخ الدم (اللي يحتوي فقط 10% من كمية الأوكسجين مما لو جان يحتوي هيموغلوبين) بشكل أكبر، وكمية الدماء بأجسامها صارت تقريبًا توصل 4 أضعاف الكمية الموجودة بباقي الأسماك المقاربة إلها بالحجم، وأوعيتها الدموية صارت أوسع، وكونها ببيئة باردة كلش، هالشي ساعد بتخفيض الـ metabolism مالتها بحيث ما تحتاج هواي أوكسجين بالإضافة إلى أنّ الأوكسجين يذوب بشكل أفضل بدرجات الحرارة المنخفضة.

This means that the disease (injury) elicits defensive reactions which paradoxically can cause secondary harm for the organism.

All defensive mechanisms encoded in human reactivity are principally imperfect and have to cause secondary harm. It means that the very defence is pathogenic, especially in chronic situations when the natural cost of adaptation increases to unbearably high level. That is central paradigm of the whole science of Pathophysiology. The imperfection and secondary pathogenicity of natural defence (autopathokinesis) was emphasized earlier, since first coined by August Weismann.

A bright example is hypoferremia in fever, which is definitely essential for defensive effect of fever on antimicrobial immunity, but at the same time harmful for erythropoiesis.
