الأبحاث الجديدة بعلم الأعصاب دتغيّر هواي مفاهيم احنة اعتبرناها من الأساسيات بهذا العلم:
مثلًا سابقًا كنا نعتقد أنّ أدمغة البالغين غير قادرة على تكوين خلايا عصبية جديدة neurogenesis، لكن الأبحاث الجديدة بيّنت أنّ الدماغ يستمر بتكوين الخلايا العصبية حتى بعد البلوغ، بمناطق مثل الـ subventricular zone والـ Dentate Gyrus.
الخلايا العصبية بالمنطقة الأولى مهمة كلش بحاسة الشم، لأنها رح تهاجر عبر الدماغ حتّى تعوّض مكان الخلايا العصبية الشمّية (olfactory epithelium) التالفة والميتة.
أما المنطقة الثانية فهي مهمة جدًا لأنها قريبة من الحُصين hippocampus المسؤول عن تكوين الذكريات والإحتفاظ بيها. ولهذا الخلايا الجديدة رح تسافر من الـ dentate gyrus للحصين حتى تساهم بمهام الذاكرة وتكوين الذكريات الجديدة.

بالإضافة لهذا، سابقًا كنا نعتقد أنّ الخلايا العصبية إلها "هوية" ثابتة. مثلًا بعض الخلايا تفرز الدوبامين، وبعضها تفرز السيروتونين، أو الأستيل كولين، وما تفرز غيرها أبد طول حياتها. لكن هسة، صرنا نعرف بوجود شي إسمه neurotransmitter switching اللي هو لما الخلية العصبية تقرر تغيّر الناقل العصبي اللي دتفرزه، أو تفرز ثنين أو أكثر بنفس الوقت.

In adults, neural stem cells are restricted to two discrete niches within the walls of the lateral ventricles: the subventricular zone, which creates cells that migrate through the rostral migratory stream to the tip of the olfactory bulb, and the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, whose new cells stay near their birthplace and differentiate into granule neurons.

The neurons formed in these niches appear to be critical for brain function and behavior. Experiments using genetic engineering to kill off newly generated cells as soon as they are born, or at a specific time point in the animals’ lives, show that the addition of new neurons to the olfactory bulb is essential for the formation of new smell memories, while those added to the hippocampus contribute to spatial memory, object recognition, and pattern separation, the process by which the brain distinguishes between similar patterns of neural activity.
