The arrival myth encourages us to deny the fact that “the next problem is always in the mail.” Whether it is a flat tire, a tax audit, a lump in the breast or on the prostate, or the illness or death of someone we love, there will be another challenge. Life keeps coming at us.
There is no path without pain; there is no life without suffering. This is a central message in the teachings of all major religions. The paths of spiritual enlightenment do not avoid or deny that pain. Indeed, they often embrace it as a powerful vehicle of personal development. To paraphrase Thomas Merton, one does not become a monk in order to suffer more or less than other human beings, but in order to suffer more efficiently.
