بيوم من الأيام، هالستيد قرأ ورقة علمية نشرها Karl Koller حول فوائد الكوكايين كمخدر بعمليات العيون. قرر هالستيد وزملاء وطلاب إلة أن يجربون الكوكايين كمخدر عام وموضعي على أنفسهم (ما جان من الغريب على الأطباء أن يجربون الأدوية والعلاجات على أنفسهم آنذاك)، واكتشفوا أنّه جان مخدر عظيم. خلال السنوات اللاحقة، هالستيد ومجموعته صاروا مدمني كوكايين وهالشي أثّر على حياتهم العملية والعلمية كلش لدرجة أنّ بيوم من الأيام أحد زملاء ويليام هالستيد قرر أن يعالجه من الأدمان عن طريق خطفه بسفينة دتبحر عبر المحيط الأطلسي لأوروبا!
خلال الأسابيع اللي عاشها هالستيد بدون كوكايين على متن السفينة، جان يعاني من أعراض الانسحاب withdawal لحد ما تشافى من الإدمان تمامًا.
لمّا رجع للولايات المتحدة، رجع للإدمان من جديد😂

بعدها بفترة دخل للمستشفى حتى يتعالج من الإدمان مرة ثانية، هالمرة أطباءه عالجوا أعراض الإنسحاب من الكوكايين... بالمورفين!
وهالستيد طور إدمان جديد للمورفين استمر وياه لبقية حياته.

رغم كل هالإضطرابات بحياته، هالستيد طوّر هواي عمليات وأدوات جراحية واكتشف العديد من الاكتشافات الطبية. ولمّا تأسست كلية جون هوبكنز للطب، ويليام ستيوارت هالستيد جان من الآباء الأربعة المؤسسين للكلية، ولليوم يُعتبر من أعظم الجراحين بالتاريخ.

In 1882 he performed one of the first gallbladder operations in the United States, a cholecystotomy performed on his mother on the kitchen table at 2 am in which he removed seven gallstones. His mother completely recovered.
