شعوب العصور الوسطى جانوا يموتون من الخوف منه لدرجة أنهم جانوا يعزلون المصابين بيه بأماكن خاصة يسموها مستعمرات المجذومين (Leper colonies) ويعوفوهم أحيانًا حتى يموتون.
بس هسة موجود بشكل نادر بأفريقيا، كالعادة.

البكتيريا المسبّبة لمرض الجذام Leprosy إسمها M. leprae وهي من أقارب البكتيريا المسببة للسل الرئوي. هالبكتيريا تشبه الفايروسات من حيث أنها ما تكدر تعيش وتتكاثر خارج الخلايا الحية (يسموها obligate intracellular). لهذا ما نكدر نزرعها بـ culture إلا بصعوبة
