No wonder we're all so worried about mental health & depression

generally speaking, religion has a prophylactic effect upon suicide. It is not, as has sometimes been said, because it condemns it more unhesitatingly than secular morality, nor because the idea of God gives its precepts exceptional authority which subdues the will, nor because the prospect of a future life and the terrible punishments there awaiting the guilty give its proscriptions a greater sanction than that of human laws. the religion with least inclination to suicide, Judaism, is the very one not formally proscribing it and also the one in which the idea of immortality plays the least role. Indeed, the Bible contains no law forbidding man to kill himself25 and, on the other hand, its beliefs in a future life are most vague.

بشكلٍ عام، فإنّ الدين له قدراتٌ وقائية من الإنتحار. وهذا ليس لأنّه يحرّم الإنتحار بشدةٍ أكبر من الأخلاقيات العَلمانية، وليس لأنّ فكرة الإله تجعل تعاليمَه ذات قوةٍ وحضورٍ أكبر في نفس الإنسان، وليس لأنّه يعِدُ بالحياة الآخرة وبالعقاب الذي يعدُّ أشدَّ بكثيرٍ من القوانين البشرية. إذ أنّ اليهودية؛ الدينُ ذو معدلاتِ الإنتحارِ الأقل، هو ذاتُه الدين الذي ليس فيه تحريمٌ صريحٌ للإنتحار وكذلك هو الدين الذي تلعبُ فيه فكرةُ الخلود دورًا ليسَ بالكبير. إذ لا يذكرُ الكتاب المقدس أي قانونٍ يحرّم الإنتحار، وإذ الإيمان بالحياة الآخرة هو من بين الأضعف والأكثر ضبابيةً بين باقي الأديان.

For our God is not an abstract thought, a logical necessity, a high and harmonious structure made of deductions and speculations.
He is not an immaculate, neutral, odorless, distilled product of our brains, neither male nor female.
He is both man and woman, mortal and immortal, dung and spirit. He gives birth, fecundates, slaughters - death and eros in one - and then he begets and slays once more, dancing spaciously beyond the boundaries of a logic which cannot contain the antinomies.
My God is not Almighty. He struggles, for he is in peril every moment; he trembles and stumbles in every living thing, and he cries out. He is defeated incessantly, but rises again, full of blood and earth, to throw himself into battle once more.
He is full of wounds, his eyes are filled with fear and stubbornness, his jawbones and temples are splintered. But he does not surrender, he ascends; he ascends with his feet, with his hands, biting his lips, undaunted.
My God is not All-holy. He is full of cruelty and savage justice, and he chooses the best mercilessly. He is without compassion; he does not trouble himself about men or animals; nor does he care for virtues and ideas. He loves all these things for a moment, then smashes them eternally and passes on.

إلهُنا ليسَ تركيبًا مجرّدًا ولا حاجةً منطقية أو فكرةً متعاليةً ومتناغمةً صَنَعَها الإستنتاج والإستقراء.
وهو ليس نتاجًا طاهرًا ومحايدًا بلا شكلٍ أو لونٍ من صُنعِ عقولنا، غيرَ مُذكَّرٍ أو مؤنَّث.

هو رجلٌ وامرأةٌ في ذاتِ الوقت، خالدٌ وفانٍ، لحمٌ وروح. يَلِد، يخصِّب، ويَقتُل - الموت والحبُّ في آنٍ واحد - وبعدَها يُنجِب ويَذبَح مجددًا، راقصًا بمرحٍ خارجَ حدود المنطق الذي لا يَحتَمِلُ اجتماعَ الأضداد.

إلهُنا ليسَ جبّارًا. إذ هو يعاني لأنّه في شقاءٍ كلَّ لحظة؛ فهو يرتعِشُ ويتعثّرُ داخل كُل مخلوقٍ حي، فَتَراهُ يَصرخُ ويُهزَم بلا انقطاع، لكنّه ينهضُ مجددًا وهو مغطّىً بالدم والتراب، ليَرمي نفسَه في المعركة مرةً أُخرى وقَد مُلِئَ بالجِراح، وغَرِقَت عيناهُ بالخوفِ والعِناد. فكّاه وصدغاه متشظّيان، لكنّه لا يستسلم، فإذا بِهِ يَتسلّق؛ يتسلّقُ بقدميه، بيديه، عاضًّا شفَتَيه، لا يثنيهِ شيء.

إلهُنا ليس قُدسيًا أو مثاليًا. بل هو مليئٌ بالوحشيّةِ والعدالةِ البدائية، وهو يختارُ الأفضَلَ بلا رحمة. فهو لا يعرِفُ الشفقة؛ وهو لا يُزعِجُ نَفسَه بالبشر والحيوانات؛ ولا يهتمُّ بالفضائِل والأفكار. لكنّه يُحِبّ كلّ هذه الأشياءِ للحظة، ثمَّ يسحَقُها بشكلٍ أبديٍّ ويُكمِلُ ارتقاءَه

صلاتي ليسَت مثل توسّلاتِ الشحّاذين ولا هي اعترافٌ بالحب. وهي، بلا شك، ليست كالمُحاسبات التافهة التي يدعو بها تاجرٌ صغير: أعطِني وسأُعطيك.
