إيجاد معنى للحياة يتطلب إيجاد "نقطةٍ مركزية" ومحورٍ ثابت للعالم يكون أعظم وأعلى من الإنسان ليستدل به، كما يستدل المسافر بنجم الشمال، في بحثه عن معنى وهدفٍ لحياته. بدون هذا المحور، يكون العالم كله نسبيًا إذ لا يوجد شيء أكبر من هذا العالم لمقارنته به، فلا يمكن للإنسان أن يستمد من ذاته هدفًا يبرر وجود ذاته، ولا يمكن أن يستمد من العالم معنىً يبرر وجود العالم.
لآلاف السنين كان هذا المعنى مستمدًا من المجتمع والآلهة والدين. لكن وبما أنّ الحضارة البشرية في القرون الأخيرة فقدت الكثير من المبادئ والأُسس التي يقوم عليها المجتمع والدين، لهذا نرى "داء فقدان المعنى" قد انتشر أكثر في المجتمعات البشرية حتى صار أشبه بالجائحة pandemic.
