منا إجة مصطلح "fighting with windmills" اللي معناه أنّك تقاتل عدو خيالي أو تحل مشكلة ما موجودة أصلًا.

فيرنر هيرزوك بالفلم مالته lessons of darkness راد يعيّش المشاهد بجو ملحمي ومروّع ولهذا هو يبدي باقتباس مزيّف عمدًا لبليز باسكال. حتى يدخّل المُشاهد بالجو اللي يريده المخرج.

الفلم يتحدث عن كارثة حرق آبار النفط بالكويت بعد حرب 1991. رغم أنّه وثائقي إلا أنّك ما رح تسمع غير القليل جدًا من الشرح والتعليق اللي أغلبه آيات وعبارات قصيرة تتحدث عن نهاية العالم. الموسيقى أغلبها كلاسيكية وملحمية، والتصوير أغلبه من منظور كائن فضائي ينظر للأحداث من الأعلى.

فيرنر هيرزوك تعمّد إستخدام هالإسلوب لأنه أراد بهذا الفلم الوثائقي "أن يتعمق أكثر بكثير مما تستطيع الـ CNN". ببساطة راد يوصّل للمشاهد الحقيقة الشاعرية والوجدانية "ecstatic truth" حول اللي صار، بدلًا من الحقائق الاعتيادية اللي تنقلها قنوات الأخبار

in the fine arts, in music, literature, and cinema, it is possible to reach a deeper stratum of truth—a poetic, ecstatic truth, which is mysterious and can only be grasped with effort; one attains it through vision, style, and craft. In this context I see the quotation from Blaise Bascal about the collapse of the stellar universe not as a fake [“counterfeit”; Fälschung], but as a means of making possible an ecstatic experience of inner, deeper truth. Just as it’s not fakery when Michelangelo’s Pietà portrays Jesus as a 33-year-old man, and his mother, the mother of God, as a 17-year-old.
