على المستوى الفردي، درجات الإختبارات (مثل اختبار الذكاء) لا تُعد مؤشرًا قويًا للنجاح في الحياة. يعرف الإقتصاديون هذه الحقيقة منذ عقود: عندما يتعلق الأمر بالعلاقة بين الدرجات العالية وبين مستوى الدخل، فإن الشذوذ هو القاعدة والعلاقة بينهما متوسطة بأفضل الأحوال.
لهذا فإن معرفة درجة شخص ما باختبار الذكاء أو باختبار السات SAT ببساطة لا يمكنه أن يبين لك كم يحصل هذا الشخص من نقود.

بإختصار:
الدرجات العالية بأي اختبار (مثل الذكاء) مالها علاقة بمدى نجاح الفرد أو مستواه الاقتصادي.
بالمقابل... متوسط درجات الأفراد بدولة معينة إلها علاقة كلش قوية بمدى نجاح وازدهار هاي الدولة.
