"Xenon pit" or "Iodine pit"

هي حالة تصير بالمفاعلات النووية لما كمية الزينون بالمفاعل تزيد بنسبة جبيرة.

اول شي، تقريباً كل المفاعلات الموجودة حالياً هي مفاعلات "انشطار" تعمل عن طريق تصويب نيوترون على ذرة يورانيوم 235 بالتالي الذرة تنشطر وتحرر طاقة (ولهذا هي مفاعلات انشطار).
ببعض الحالات، تركيز اليود 121 يزيد بقلب المفاعل. اليود ينشطر ويكون ذرات زينون Xenon... وحدة من صفات الزينون هو انه strong neutron absorber يعني النيوترونات بدل ما تشطر اليورانيوم، رح يمتصها الزينون ويخفض التفاعل النووي ويقلله.

بالتالي، حفرة الزينون (او حفرة اليود مرات يسموها) تصير لما كمية الزينون تزيد، وهذا معناه النيوترونات الحرة بدل ما تشطر اليورانيوم، رح يمتصها الزينون... بالتالي يقلل التفاعل ويخفضه.
