BUNKER CONVENTION

▪️ The International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage (BUNKER) is an International treaty listed and administered by the International Maritime Organization, enforced from November 2008.

▪️The purpose is to adopt uniform international rules and procedures for determining questions of liability and providing adequate compensation.

▪️ The convention covers leakage of that oil, and requires signatories to the convention to have their ships appropriately insured against such leakages.

▪️ India is yet to ratify International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage (BUNKER)

▪️National Resource Efficiency Authority (NREA) : It will be constituted under the Environment Protection Act, 1986. It will be based in the MOEFCC. It will oversee, administer and review implementation of the NREP.

▪️National Resource Efficiency Board: It is an inter- ministerial body. It will provide necessary guidelines on aspects critical to the implementation of resource efficiency across all sectors.

▪️MOEFCC constituted Resource Efficiency Cell (RE Cell) with aim to institutionalize resource efficiency for sustainable consumption and production. RE Cell has drafted the NREP.

Petersberg Climate Dialogue

It has been hosted by Germany since 2010 to provide a forum for informal high-level political discussions, focusing both on international climate negotiations and the advancement of climate action.

The virtual XI Petersberg Climate Dialogue was co-chaired by Germany and the United Kingdom (UK) and was attended by about 30 countries including India.

This year’s dialogue was crucial because of the efforts to contain coronavirus as well as countries preparing to move into the implementation phase of the Paris Agreement 2015 in the post-2020 period.

Asian brown cloud

The Indian Ocean brown cloud or Asian brown cloud is a layer of air pollution that recurrently covers parts of South Asia, namely the northern Indian Ocean, India, and Pakistan.

Viewed from satellite photos, the cloud appears as a giant brown stain hanging in the air over much of South Asia and the Indian Ocean every year between January and March, possibly also during earlier and later months.

The term was coined in reports from the UNEP Indian Ocean Experiment (INDOEX)

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has launched “Wood is Good” Campaign under Partnership for Land Use Science (Forest-Plus).

It was launched on sidelines of two-day conference on “Sustainable landscapes and forest ecosystems: Theory to Practice” in New Delhi.

The purpose of campaign is to promote wood as climate-friendly resource and substitute to materials like steel and plastic as it is carbon neutral unlike others materials which leave carbon footprint in their production
