ECOLOGICAL FISCAL TRANSFERS
• Ecological Fiscal Transfer is a type of conditional environmental payments which involves conditional payments from higher levels of a country’s government to lower levels

▪️Nekton: Nekton refers to the aggregate of actively swimming aquatic organisms in a body of water. Nekton are heterotrophic and have a large size range, with familiar examples such as fish, squid, octopus, sharks, and marine mammals.

RO is a type of filtration that uses a semi-permeable, thin membrane with pores small enough to pass pure water through while rejecting larger molecules such as dissolved salts (ions) and other impurities (bacteria, colloids, organics etc). A membrane rejects contaminants based on their size and charge.
• RO membranes do not remove gases like CO2 or O2 because these gases are not highly ionized
ISSUES
Demineralization: Besides impurities, RO water purifier (when TDS level in water is less than
50) also removes essential natural mineral like sodium, iron, calcium, and magnesium that are
essential for our body.

United for Biodiversity’ coalition
The European Commission (EC) has launched the ‘United for Biodiversity’ coalition.
The coalition is made up of zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, national parks, and natural history and science museums from around the world.
The coalition offers the opportunity for all such institutions to “join forces and boost public awareness about the nature crisis.
The coalition adopted a common pledge, citing the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and
Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Global Assessment finding that one million species were already at risk of extinction, and appeals to visitors to each of their institutions to “raise their voice for nature.

NATIONAL PLAN FOR CONSERVATION OF AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS (NPCA)
• National Wetlands Conservation Programme' (NWCP) and 'National Lake Conservation Plan' (NLCP)have been merged into one integrated scheme, National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Eco-systems (NPCA).
• The scheme aims at holistic conservation and restoration of lakes and wetlands for achieving the desired water quality enhancement, besides improvement in biodiversity and ecosystem through an integrated and multidisciplinary approach and a common regulatory framework.

• The initiative comes under the Ministry of Earth Sciences and Environment.
• Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi has been announced by the Central government that can alert, three days in advance, about the likelihood of extreme pollution events & dust storms.
• The air pollution system has been developed jointly by: Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), India Meteorological Department, National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF).

The ‘State of India’s Birds 2020’ report, the first comprehensive assessment of range, abundance and conservation status of birds in India, has underlined concerns about some bird species and good news about a few others.
Released during CMS COP13, the international conference held recently in Gandhinagar, the report was prepared as a partnership among 10 organisations including the World Wildlife Fund, Wildlife Institute of India and Nature
Biodiversity Authority-India.
Much of its data is based on citizen science — information provided by birdwatchers through various platforms.
