Under Kyoto Protocol
A removal unit (RMU) on the basis of land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) activities such as reforestation.
An emission reduction unit (ERU) generated by a joint implementation project
A certified emission reduction (CER) generated from a clean development mechanism project activity.
Transfers and acquisitions of these units are tracked and recorded through the registry systems under the Kyoto
Protocol.
An international transaction log ensures secure transfer of emission reduction units between countries.

Convention on Biological Diversity
The Convention has three main goals including:
1) the conservation of biological diversity (or biodiversity);
2) the sustainable use of its components;
3) the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources.
CBD has two supplementary agreements - Cartagena Protocol and Nagoya Protocol.

2012 COP 11
Conference of the Parties (COP 11) meeting on biodiversity was held in Hyderabad, India 2012,involving old and new partners and building on the experiences from the World Wide Views on Global Warming.
2010 was the International Year of Biodiversity and the Secretariat of the CBD was its focal point.
UN, on 22 December 2010, declared 2011 to 2020 as the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity.
• The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity is an international treaty governing the movements of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology from one country to another.
• The Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity is a supplementary agreement to the Convention on Biological Diversity. It provides a transparent legal framework for the effective implementation of one of the three objectives of the CBD: the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources.

Ecological Fiscal Transfers (EFT) distribute a share of intergovernmental fiscal transfers and revenue sharing schemes according to ecological indicators such as protected areas or watershed management areas.
These conservation areas thus become a source of income for the receiving governments. EFT were invented as a compensation scheme for municipalities.

The World Wide Fund for Nature has derived a system called the "Global 200 Ecoregions", the aim of which is to select priority Ecoregions for conservation within each of 14 terrestrial, 3 freshwater, and 4 marine habitat types. They are chosen for their species richness, endemism, taxonomic uniqueness, unusual ecological or evolutionary phenomena, and global rarity. All biodiversity hotspots contain at least one Global 200 Ecoregion.

Cultural model of Conservation
• This is based on a respect for rights of indigenous peoples & other bearers of “traditional knowledge” & prevents social conflicts.
• It involves forest dwellers in forest mgmt. & governance & acknowledges traditional rights of tribal over minor forest produce & provisions for making conservation more effective & more transparent.
• Kinshasa Resolution of 1975 (under IUCN) provides international recognition to cultural model of conservation. It acknowledges importance of traditional ways of life & land ownership, & call on governments to maintain & encourage customary ways of living
