Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) is an umbrella term commonly used to include areas that contribute to the global persistence of biodiversity, including vital habitat for threatened plant and animal species in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems.
• Sites qualify as global KBAs if they meet one or more of 11 criteria, clustered into five categories:
-threatened biodiversity
- geographically restricted biodiversity
- ecological integrity
-biological processes
- and, irreplaceability.

Breakthrough Energy Coalition
A group of 28 investors from various countries have launched a new global consortium called – Breakthrough Energy Coalition.
The multi-billion dollar group is launched to develop
zero-carbon energy technologies.
The group plans to invest in a number of sectors including electricity generation and storage, transport, industry, agriculture and energy system efficiency.

Black carbon-the soot emitted during incomplete combustion of fossil fuels in coal-fired power plants,cars and other equipment.
Brown carbon -which originates primarily during the combustion of organic biomass.

Under Kyoto Protocol
A removal unit (RMU) on the basis of land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) activities such as reforestation.
An emission reduction unit (ERU) generated by a joint implementation project
A certified emission reduction (CER) generated from a clean development mechanism project activity.
Transfers and acquisitions of these units are tracked and recorded through the registry systems under the Kyoto
Protocol.
An international transaction log ensures secure transfer of emission reduction units between countries.

Convention on Biological Diversity
The Convention has three main goals including:
1) the conservation of biological diversity (or biodiversity);
2) the sustainable use of its components;
3) the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources.
CBD has two supplementary agreements - Cartagena Protocol and Nagoya Protocol.
CBD AND INDIA
2012 COP 11
Conference of the Parties (COP 11) meeting on biodiversity was held in Hyderabad, India 2012,involving old and new partners and building on the experiences from the World Wide Views on Global Warming.
2010 was the International Year of Biodiversity and the Secretariat of the CBD was its focal point.
UN, on 22 December 2010, declared 2011 to 2020 as the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity.
• The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity is an international treaty governing the movements of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology from one country to another.
• The Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity is a supplementary agreement to the Convention on Biological Diversity. It provides a transparent legal framework for the effective implementation of one of the three objectives of the CBD: the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources.

Ecological Fiscal Transfers (EFT) distribute a share of intergovernmental fiscal transfers and revenue sharing schemes according to ecological indicators such as protected areas or watershed management areas.
These conservation areas thus become a source of income for the receiving governments. EFT were invented as a compensation scheme for municipalities.
