The situation escalated again just as quickly.

Renewed military activity and continued instability around Hormuz pushed the risk premium back into the market, and oil rebounded within hours.

Oil is setting the tone this week, and everything else is reacting to it.

• Brent +5% — Mon, settling at $87.72
• SpaceX +4% — Mon
• Chip stocks −2% — Mon
• Bitcoin −1.5% — Tue, back near $64,000

▶️ Talks on reopening the Strait of Hormuz stalled over the weekend, with Tehran saying it is not in direct negotiations with Washington and Trump describing the US as "only semi-negotiating."

🔼Crude jumped on the risk premium, and the 10-year Treasury yield added six basis points on Monday to 4.71%. Oil feeding into yields is the last setup anyone wants going into an inflation print.

Chip stocks had a separate reason. Intel announced a $15bn common stock offering, which pulled the sector down around 2% on Monday. SpaceX went the other way and closed back above its $135 IPO price for the first time in weeks.

The moves worth flagging from Aug 10 to Aug 15.

🕯 July CPI came in at 0.1% on the month and 3.4% on the year, core at 0.2% and 2.5%. PPI followed on Thursday, also cooler. Odds of a Fed hike in September fell to around 34% from roughly 55%, and the S&P closed at a record above 7,800. AI earnings did the rest.

🟠CoreWeave: +19.3% on Wednesday, from $90.32 to $107.73. Q2 revenue of $2.58bn, up 112% year on year, backlog at $104bn.
🟠 Nebius: +12.5% the same day on stronger-than-expected EBITDA. The neocloud names moved together.
🟠 Brent +5% on Monday to $87.72 after Hormuz talks stalled, then eased through the week. Falling oil helped carry equities to the record.

Meanwhile, crypto stayed out of it: Bitcoin near $64,000, Ethereum near $1,900, with no catalyst either way ✔️

🕯 Here's the catch most people miss: this only resolves Yes if the bill clears both chambers AND gets signed by December 31, 2026, 23:59 ET. Passing the House doesn't count. A signature in January doesn't count either. It's all or nothing, on the clock.

Next real test: Senate cloture vote on September 15.

Gold ripped more than 5% this week 💰

On August 19, the Treasury said it's at least doubling buybacks of long-dated debt, trying to keep long-term borrowing costs from creeping up. Buy back the long stuff, you need cash for it, so more short-term bills hit the market instead. Traders took that as the government leaning on its own currency to manage its balance sheet. The dollar index fell to its lowest since May.

💵 Anyone holding dollars eats that. That includes anyone holding USDC a stablecoin doesn't dodge the dollar, it just carries it. And the dollar is exactly what got repriced this week.

Silver and platinum caught the same updraft. Bitcoin ran to nearly $78,000 on the same story.

Worth flagging: this isn't a metals rush. Gold demand hit a five-year low last quarter. So the move is about price, not buyers wanting the actual metal. Gold, silver, bitcoin all got hit by the same trigger, they didn't set each other off.

The Clarity Act market trades low for a reason. Sept 15 is only cloture, permission to debate. The actual finish line is a signed bill by Dec 31, with a deadlocked Congress in between. The price is just doing that math out loud

Dead-looking bills have cleared before. GENIUS Act lost its first cloture vote. Passed weeks later 🗓

Low is not zero. Low is 'rare'. And rare shows up more often than your gut thinks.

Greece is the only one below zero. Households there are covering the gap by either by borrowing or by spending down what they put away earlier.

🧾 Why the spread is this wide

It’s mostly income. A Greek household takes home over 20% less per head than the EU average, and rent and the basics don't scale down to match.

Then there's what the state picks up. Where pensions and healthcare are largely public, a household doesn't need to hold as much back on its own. That is what puts several of the richer countries on this list in the middle of it rather than at the top.
