IELTS or TOEFL: HOW TO CHOOSE

it's important to first make sure ALL of the universities you're applying to accept the test you end up taking (TOEFL or IELTS). Once you know that, here are some questions to ask yourself to help you decide which test will be easier for you:

Answer the following questions with a simple β€œyes” or β€œno.”

✳️ I am comfortable with computers. YES/NO
✳️ I am comfortable speaking extemporaneously into a microphone. YES/NO
✳️ can type quickly. YES/NO
✳️ I prefer standard American English. YES/NO
✳️ I am good at answering multiple-choice questions. YES/NO
✳️ It is easy for me to take notes from a recording. YES/NO
✳️ The authentic English sources I read/listen to/watch are usually intended to inform rather than entertain. YES/NO

If you answered YES to most of these questions, the TOEFL is probably the best fit for your skill set.

✳️ I am comfortable having a detailed interview in-person. YES/NO
✳️ I have legible English handwriting. YES/NO
✳️ I can understand a variety of dialects of English. YES/NO
✳️ I prefer tests with many question types, including multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, matching, true/false, and flowcharts. YES/NO
✳️ I feel most comfortable discussing non-academic topics in English. YES/NO
✳️ The authentic English sources that I read/listen to/watch are usually made to entertain. YES/NO

If you answered YES to most of these questions, then you might find the IELTS to be more up your alley.

I almost forgot... Engvid just released a new lesson about Mind Map.

How reading helps you in learning English?

1. Reading helps you understand the way a language is put together (it puts vocabulary and grammar together)
2. Reading teaches you how to speak by showing you the language used by native speakers
3. Reading introduces new vocabulary in a natural way.

To read without problems you must know 80% of vocabulary. Woooow. How to remembers so much? Check out new Adam's video lesson - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1rwf370z5E

πŸ“—Interrogative determiners: which and what

We use "which" as a determiner to ask a question about a specific group of people or things:

Which restaurant did you go to?
Which countries in South America have you visited?

When we are asking a general question we use "what" as a determiner:

What films do you like?
What university did you go to?
Attention❗️ Don't study grammar too much!πŸ™Š

It might sound strange to many students, but it is one of the most important rules. If you want to pass examinations, then study grammar. However, if you want to become fluent in English, then you should try to learn English without studying the grammar.

Studying grammar will only slow you down and confuse you. You will think about the rules when creating sentences instead of naturally saying a sentence like a native.

Do you want to be able to recite the definition of a causative verb, or do you want to be able to speak English fluently?πŸ˜‰
