The fair sex or the fairer sex is a cliché defining women in general. The expression came into use in the 1600s as fair maid or fair maiden, but there is also a theory that it's a direct translation of the French le beau sexe, a phrase popularized by the English journalists Joseph Addison and Richard Steel.
The word fair is used in the meaning of "physically beautiful" and is considered to be inappropriate nowadays due to its emphasis on the physical appearance of women and girls.
