🇮🇷 | The recent announcement that Iranian authorities have dismantled 22 human trafficking networks in western Tehran and deported more than 400 irregular migrants is an important development. For years, Iran, like Turkey, has become a major transit corridor for the dangerous “dunki” or “donkey route” used by South Asian migrants attempting to reach Europe. This path has led to systematic kidnappings, extortion, torture, disappearances, and in some cases killings by local trafficking syndicates operating along the route.

From my own research and multiple testimonies submitted to Iranian authorities, I have consistently warned that the permissive environment around these networks has enabled a massive underground economy of human trafficking. Thousands of men and women from Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and other regions continue to be lured by smugglers with false promises. Many are trapped in criminal networks inside Iran and Turkey.

✅ | The discontinuation of visa free travel for Indian passport holders, which previously contributed to the sharp rise of irregular migration toward Europe, shows that Iranian institutions have begun to recognize the severity of the crisis. The latest operation signals that the state is now moving toward more serious enforcement.

1. The Office of the Supreme Leader (Imam Khamenei) and the IRGC

to adopt zero tolerance measures against human trafficking cells, especially in border regions, safehouses, and rural transit corridors.

2. Systematic intelligence led operations

both in western Tehran and along known trafficking routes linking Sistan Baluchistan, Kermanshah, West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, and border zones with Turkey and Iraq.

3. Accountability for officials who collude with traffickers

since corruption networks often enable smuggling gangs to move thousands of migrants without interference.

4. Cross border coordination with Turkey, Pakistan, and Iraq

to shut down the multi layered mafia chains involved in kidnapping, ransom extraction, and forced marches toward Europe.

5. Protection mechanisms for victims

including safe shelters, legal support, and rapid response teams for those kidnapped or held for ransom.

Human trafficking along the Iran Turkey Europe corridor is one of the most lethal irregular migration routes in the world today. The dismantling of 22 networks is meaningful, but the scale of the crisis demands a sustained, uncompromising, and high level national response.


6. Urgent action regarding Pakistani border forces

Serious measures are also needed against the networks and officials inside Pakistan who allow or facilitate these trafficking routes. A significant portion of the dunki flows begin on the Pakistani side of the border, where smugglers move migrants through organized safehouses, corrupt checkpoints, and unofficial crossings. Without accountability inside Pakistan, the regional trafficking chain will continue to regenerate and push people toward Iran, Turkey, and eventually Europe.

Pakistan must confront the officials, border officers, and local syndicates who collaborate with or turn a blind eye to these operations. Strong regional pressure and coordinated intelligence sharing are essential, because the first stage of this illegal journey often begins with local protection networks inside Pakistan itself.

✅ | Between 2019 and 2021, I personally conducted interviews and documented the testimonies of Shi’a migrants who attempted to reach the European Union and later fled or scattered after facing extreme violence. Their accounts described some of the harshest conditions any human being can endure.

Many of them had been forced to walk barefoot through snow and hostile mountain terrain, surviving freezing temperatures with almost no food or shelter. Others reported severe beatings and humiliation at the hands of border police. Several disclosed cases of sexual assault, forced labour, extortion, and torture carried out by trafficking groups, border militias, and criminal syndicates operating along the route.

These testimonies were not isolated incidents. They revealed a consistent pattern of abuse, vulnerability, and exploitation, especially targeting Shi’a migrants from South Asia and the Middle East. The scale and brutality of what these individuals experienced deeply affected me and pushed me to treat this issue with the utmost seriousness.

Since then, a small number of dedicated team members within EnemyWatch have continued to work tirelessly to expose these crimes, support affected individuals, and push for accountability. Even though resources are limited, the commitment remains strong, and the goal is to ensure that at least some meaningful action is taken against the networks responsible for such inhuman practices.
