Sayyidah Zaynab (S) Buried in Damascus?

Many historians and scholars, based on a range of historical, textual, and traditional evidences, believe that the sacred resting place of Sayyidah Zaynab al-Kubra (S) is situated in the southeastern outskirts of Damascus, the capital of Syria, approximately seven kilometers from the city, in the village of Rawiyah, within the Ghuta region. Historical records suggest that the shrine was visited as early as the second century Hijri. Among the earliest visitors was Sayyidah Nafisah, the wife of Ishaq, son of Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (S). Over time, scholars and travelers have formed three broad groups regarding her burial:

The first group consists of scholars who affirmed that Sayyidah Zaynab (S) is buried in Damascus. This includes notable figures such as Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Dhahabi al-Dimashqi (d. 748 AH), Abu ’Abdullah Muhammad ibn ’Abdulläh ibn Battüta al-Maghribi (d. 770 AH), Abu al-Baga ’Abdulläh ibn Muhammad al-Badri al-Misri (d. 848 AH), Burhän al-Din Abu Ishq Ibrähim ibn Muhammad al-Halabi al-ShāfiT (d. 900 AH), Qadi Nur al-Din Mahmüd in ’Ali al-Adawi al-ShāfiT (d. 1035 AH), Yasin ibn Mustafa al-Fardi al-Bigal (d. 1095 AH), Shaykh Hasan Yazdi (d. 1242 AH), Mirza ’Ali Kani (d. 1306 AH), Mujaddid al-Shirazi (d. 1312 AH), Muhammad Hasan al-Buragi al-Najafi, Muhammad Hasan Ashtiyani (d. 1319 AH), Muhammad Husayn Kazimi (d. 1308 AH), Muhammad Hasan Maräghi (d. 1312 AH), Husayn Nüri al-Tabarsi (d. 1320 AH), Hasan Sadr al-Kazimi (d. 1388 AH), Muhammad Husayn Kashif al-Ghita (d. 1373 AH), Sayyid ’Abd al-Husayn Sharaf al-Din (d. 1377 AH), Sayyid Hibat al-Din al-Shahrastani (d. 1388 AH), Shaykh ’Abbas al-Qummi (d. 1335 AH), ’Al ibn ’Abd al-‘Azim al-Waiz al-Isfahani (author of Waga’ï al-Ayyäm), Shaykh Hashim al-Khurasani (d. 1352 AH), Sayyid Muhsin al-Hakim (d. 1390 AH), Sayyid Muhammad Kazim Shariatmadar, and ’Allamah ’Abd al-’Ali al-Sabiqi al-Pakistani (d. 1384 AH).

The second group includes scholars who also supported the Damascus location but were somewhat more contemporary or cautious in their assessments. Among them are Abù al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Jubayr al-Kināfi al-Gharnäti (d. 614 AH), Imād al-Din Hasan ibn ’Ali ibn Muhammad al-Tabari (d. 676 AH), ’Uthmān ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Suwaydi al-Hawrani (d. 970 or 1003 AH), Ahmad Fahmi Muhammad al-Misri, ’Abd al-Qadir al-Rihawi al-Dimashqi, and Tawfiq Abü ’Alam al-Misri. The latter three are among contemporary scholars who support the Damascus site.

The third group consists of historians who suggest that the person buried in Rawiyah may be Umm Kulthum, though they provide no further clarification or specify which Umm Kulthum they are referring to. It is well-known that Sayyidah Zaynab (S) herself also held the kunyah (title) of Umm Kulthum, as she had a daughter named Kulthum. Those who hold this view include Abu al-Hasan ’Ali ibn Abi Bakr al-Harawi (d. 611 AH) in al-Isharāt ilā Marifat al-Ziyarāt, Yaqut ibn ’Abdulläh al-Hamawi al-Baghdädi (d. 624 AH) in Mujam al-Buldan, Abu ’Abdullah ibn ’Ali ibn Ibrhim ibn Shaddād al-Halabi (d. 684 AH) in al-Alāq al-Khatirah, and Saläh al-Din Muhammad ibn Shākir al-Dārimi (d. 764 AH).

Early Existence and Fame of the Shrine in Damascus

The existence and widespread recognition of the shrine of Sayyidah Zaynab (S) in Damascus during the second century AH is well documented. Historical sources indicate that in 193 AH, Sayyidah Nafisah, the wife of Ishaq al-Mutaman, son of Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (S), visited this shrine—a visitation recorded by biographers of Sayyidah Nafisah (d. 308 AH, Egypt). The significance here lies not in the opinions of these authors regarding who was buried at the site, but in the clear historical acknowledgment and fame of the shrine itself. Among the authors and historians who mentioned it, ’Ali ibn Hasan in Hibat Allah al-Dimashqi (d. 561 AH) noted that the lady buried to the east of the grave of Madraq is Sayyidah Zaynab (S), whom al-Hawrani in al-Isharat referred to as Umm Kulthum. Similarly, Abu al-Hasan ’Ali ibn Abi Bakr al-Harawi (d. 611 AH) cited the shrine under the name Umm Kulthum in al-Isharat ila Marifat al-Ziyarat, also recording details of her life in Kashf al-Zunün and al-Lama’t al-Barqiyyah. Furthermore, Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Jubayr al-Kinani (d. 614 AH), in his travelogue Rihlat Ibn Jubayr (published in Egypt), referred to the shrine both as Zaynab and by her kunyah Umm Kulthum, describing its location as one farsakh from the city in the village of Rawiyah. He noted that the shrine was situated beneath a mosque, surrounded by houses, and endowed with awqāf (religious endowments), confirming both its historical presence and significance as a site of Shia devotion in early Damascus.

During reconstruction, a stone slab roughly the height of a human being was found inside the grave, bearing an ancient Kufic inscription. The first two lines were barely legible due to age and erosion, but, with difficulty, they were read as: “This is the grave of Sayyidah Zaynab, daughter of ʿAli ibn Abi Talib (S), daughter of al‑Zahra (S), who passed away in this place and was buried here upon her second return.” This inscription was then placed above the grave itself.

The Najaf historian Sayyid Husayn al‑Buragi (d. 1320 AH) recorded this event in his handwritten treatise al‑Thamar al‑Mutana. He narrates it from Sayyid Salim al‑Murtada, a former caretaker of the Zaynabiyyah shrine, who traveled to Najaf in 1302 AH and related the incident in the presence of Ayatollah Muhammad Husayn al‑Kazimi. The eminent historian Salah al‑Din al‑Munajjid commented on this discovery, noting that such inscriptions are invaluable for confirming and authenticating what we find in manuscript traditions, since our civilization has left many such records from distant eras.

All these details and the major reports that confirm the shrine’s presence in Damascus, together with parallel reports confirming the migration of the Ahl al‑Bayt from Medina in the face of Umayyad tyranny, make the Damascus identification historically strong. No propaganda can erase these realities. Damascus is intrinsically linked to Sayyidah Zaynab (S), and likewise Shia communities form an integral part of Syria’s social and spiritual fabric. Those who threaten the life and security of the peaceful population or attempt to desecrate sacred sites must be prevented from doing so and held accountable through legal and protective measures; the preservation of shrines and the safety of residents must be ensured by local and international authorities.

We curse the enemies of Allah and the Ahl al‑Bayt; their treachery, desecration and lies are exposed for what they are, and history will record them in shame. Their plots to unsettle the faithful, to profane the sanctities and to erase our memory will fail; let their hypocrisy be unmasked, let their falsehoods return to them, and may truth, justice and the protection of the holy places prevail. We call on the righteous to stand firm, defend the shrines, preserve the heritage of the Ahl‑ul‑Bayt, and hold those responsible to account by every lawful and moral means. May Allah curse Ummayads, Marwanids, Zubayrids, Abbasids, Ayyubids, arrogant Jews, Zionists, Saudis, wretched and distorter Wahabis, arrogant Salafis, Tahiri Sham, Erdogan and his regime...

The Resistance Security confirmed that the operation led to the neutralization of the threat, the seizure of related funds and resources, and the arrest of those involved within the Gaza Strip.

Home demolitions, creeping annexation of municipal boundaries, and the legalizing of facts on the ground make each small advance look irreversible.

At the same time a political and narrative front works in parallel. Normalization deals, diplomatic pressure, and economic incentives try to legitimize the new status quo while intelligence operations, surveillance, and proxy forces test and weaken local resistance. The result is not one dramatic conquest but a thousand small changes that together alter demographics, governance, and daily life. That is how occupation becomes permanent: not by a single sweeping victory but by patient, incremental encroachment that, over months and years, remakes the map.

The so-called calm is nothing but a façade; under its cover, the Zionist occupation expands, fortifies, and prepares for the next stage of aggression while the world looks away.
