Trump’s swift reaction “we’ll hit again if necessary” showed the US perceived this as a sign of Iranian weakness. Instead of this, Iran should have emphasized its deterrent capabilities and continuity of its nuclear program to engage from a stronger position. This approach risks reinforcing the pressure-sanctions discourse in Washington.

In reality, such reactions were natural responses to the blatant acts of aggression. This kind of positioning might embolden the enemy to escalate its threats and attacks, sensing a lack of unified and firm diplomatic resolve from Iran.

While the interview did convey positive messages, such as the non-negotiability of Iran’s right to enrichment, these two strategic missteps could be exploited by the opposing side rather than strengthening Iran’s stance. Any signal of weakness or passivity could lead to harsher sanctions and greater threats, while projecting deterrence would actually improve the environment for future negotiations.
