📕 | Report: On the occasion of the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Ja’far Sadiq (A), on April 24, 2025, after the Majlis-al-Aza, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Imam Khamenei, delivered an important talk on Imam Ja’far Sadiq (A) and the issue of Imamate. Here are some excerpts from his speech: (1/2):
… During the time of Imam Sadiq (A), due to divine destiny, not as a final divine decree, a change was about to occur regarding the status of the Imams (A). Multiple narrations make this clear. One narration reported from Imam Sadiq (A) states: “Indeed, Allah had destined this matter (i.e., true Imamate) for the year 70 Hijri.” (Kitaab al-Kafi, Vol. 1, p. 368 with slight variation)
Consider this: When Imam Hasan Mujtaba (A) made peace with Mu’awiya, some people came to complain and object. He responded, “You do not know, perhaps this is a test for you and beneficial for a time” — meaning, this is a temporary period. Imam Hasan’s words indicate that the dominance of disbelief and hypocrisy is not permanent but temporary as per divine destiny, and it would end by the year 70 Hijri. According to this narration, anyone from Ahl al-Bayt alive in the year 70 Hijri would rise and take the leadership, and true Imamate would be established.
He then continued, “But when Imam Husayn (A) was martyred, Allah’s anger intensified upon the earth, and He postponed this destiny, delaying it until the year 140 Hijri.” The tragedy of Karbala and the people’s disregard for religious values led to this postponement of divine destiny. The year 140 Hijri was the time of Imam Sadiq (A), as he was martyred in 148 Hijri. The Shia knew this, and the Shia elites were aware of this as well. This is why a narration mentions that Zurara, one of Imam Sadiq’s (A) close companions, said to his companions, “You will not see anyone other than Ja’far on this throne (caliphate).” (Rijal al-Kashi, p. 156) In this narration, “Awwad” refers to the foundation of the caliphate’s throne, meaning I see Ja’far (A) seated on this throne.
Another narration mentions that Zurara, who lived in Kufa, sent a message to Imam Sadiq (A) and said: “One of our Shia friends has incurred debt, and the creditors are pursuing him. He has had to leave the city due to lack of money. If this matter (i.e., the establishment of the caliphate) is going to happen in one or two years — as the narration states: ‘This matter’ — then he should be patient, for once you assume the leadership, the issue will be resolved. However, if it is going to take longer, we will collect funds and pay off his debt.” (Rijal al-Kashi, p. 157)
This shows that figures like Zurara expected this event to take place in a year or two. People would repeatedly ask Imam Sadiq (A), “Why don’t you rise, Mawlā?” This is because they were waiting for something, they had heard something, or some news had reached them.
After the narration determining the year 140 Hijri, Imam Sadiq (A) said:
“You people have revealed this secret, and thus Allah has postponed it.” Meaning, if the Shia had kept this secret and not disclosed it, perhaps the event would have occurred at the appointed time. Consider how much history could have changed! The path of humanity could have been completely different, and the world today would have been entirely different.
This shows that our shortcomings, sometimes our careless words, sometimes our failure to stand by the truth, unjust objections, lack of patience, or misinterpretation of events, can sometimes lead to such historical effects that the entire course changes. Therefore, we must be extremely cautious.
Indeed, the life of Imam Sadiq (A) was extraordinary, remarkable, and successful, particularly in the promotion and dissemination of Allah’s commands. We have a vast collection of narrations from him (A) and his companions. However, when the mention of his 4,000 students is made, the listener might imagine that he began a lesson with 4,000 people sitting together and receiving instruction. In reality, this was not the case.

(2/2):
In fact, during Imam Sadiq’s (A) entire life, the total number of his students who gained knowledge from him reached 4,000, as recorded in historical books. This means there were 4,000 narrators, and this is what the 4,000 students refer to. It doesn’t mean that 4,000 people were sitting in a lesson at one time.
We know very little about the lives of the Imams (A) — we don’t have complete knowledge of their words, statements, narrations, or their life circumstances.
There is a narration which mentions that Imam Sadiq (A) was presented before Mansur, and Mansur expressed great anger at him. Then Imam (A) said: “O my cousin! Great prophets were oppressed, they forgave, so forgive us too.” I firmly state that these events are fabricated; Imam (A) would never speak like this, whether facing the threat of death or not. Imam (A) would never speak in this manner. This narration was transmitted by Rabi, a servant of Mansur and a courtly liar who fabricated this story.
This narration was a tactic to weaken the spirit of the Shia, and such narrations should be completely avoided. Some people repeat them unnecessarily, although they are not authentic. The Imams (A) teach us steadfastness, resilience, and logic — they use reasoning and evidence in their words, and they confound the opponent in their own words.
Consider how Hazrat Zaynab (S) displayed courage and truthfulness in the court of Ibn Ziyad and before Yazid! This is the true manner of speaking, and this is the method of the Imams (A). Whoever stands firm in the truth is, in fact, walking in the footsteps of these great figures.
Today, the mujahideen in Gaza and Lebanon, who stand firm with resilience, are practically following the path of the Imams (A).
