One of the brutal tactics of the Umayyads was the dragging of bodies after execution, humiliating the fallen as a display of power and terror. This same method was revived by Julani's terrorist groups in Syria, who dragged the bodies of their victims through the streets as a warning to others.

Muslim ibn Aqil, the envoy of Imam Husayn (A) to Kufa, the real nephew of Imam Ali (A) and also his son-in-law and Hani ibn Urwah (r), a companion of Prophet Muhammad (S) and Imam Ali (A) were brutally killed by Ibn al-Ziyad (l):

قال: نعم، لم أخرج من الكوفة حتى قتل مسلم بن عقيل و هانئ بن عروة، فرأيتهما يُجرّان بأرجلهما في السوق

He [narrator] said: “Yes, I did not leave Kufa until Muslim ibn Aqil and Hani ibn Urwah were killed. I saw them being dragged by their legs in the marketplace.”
