✅ It seems clear that Iran has not only been assisting the current Taliban government but has also extended its support beyond that. After the return of Iran’s foreign minister from Kabul, the head of the Taliban spoke to his cabinet using words that were notably friendlier and more direct than typical diplomatic language. This shift in tone suggests an increasing closeness between the two sides. There is, however, an internal threat to the Taliban from within, particularly with the growing influence of separatist groups funded by the U.S. This flow of money to such groups raises fears of potential targeted assassinations of senior Taliban leaders. Despite this, it appears that the Taliban, as a whole, cannot be sacrificed or relied upon entirely unless they remain faithful and maintain integrity with neighbours not foreigners. Iran’s support for the Taliban is largely driven by their shared anti-American stance, rather than an endorsement of the Taliban’s ideology, which has been responsible for numerous atrocities, including massacres of Shia Muslims, Sunni dissidents, and the destruction of general populace. When the Taliban first took control, Imam Khamenei (h) stated that the Iranian revolution’s support is for the Afghan people, not any specific regime, as regimes may change. His subsequent speeches have sometimes omitted direct mention of the Taliban but have praised the defeat of the U.S. by the group by the people of the land. Currently, mutual cooperation appears to be the best solution, especially for resolving issues like water-sharing disputes, and Iran’s support has provided the Taliban with access to advanced technology and intelligence resources.
