🏴 Report | 25 Rajab marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Musa Kazim (A), the seventh Imam of the Ahlulbayt, who was born in 128/745 in the village of Abwa’ (between Mecca and Medina). He was the son of Imam Jafar Sadiq (A), son of Imam Baqir (A), son of Imam Sajjad (A), son of Imam Husayn (A). His thirty-five years of imamate coincided with the reigns of the Abbasid emperors like al-Mansur, al-Hadi, al-Mahdi, and Harun al-Rashid.
Imam Musa Kazim (A) endured repeated imprisonments under the rule of al-Mahdi and Harun al-Rashid. Ultimately, he was martyred in 183/799 while confined in the prison of al-Sindi b. Shahik, who was a Jew conspiring with other enemies of Islam against the Imam (A). After his martyrdom, his son, Imam Ali al-Ridha (A), succeeded him as the next Imam. It is clear that Jews were behind his assassination with Harun, conspiring against him and innovating ways of torture in Sindi’s dungeon, including the use of poison.
When Imam Musa Kazim (A) was martyred, his body was placed on the bridge of Baghdad at the orders of al-Sindi, and it was falsely announced that he had died of natural causes. However, most historians believe he was poisoned by Yahya b. Khalid and al-Sindi b. Shahik. Other accounts suggest that he was suffocated by being wrapped in a carpet. Some unreliable claims, such as hot lead being poured down his throat.
Despite the Abbasid regime’s efforts to malign the Imam (A), his virtues and spiritual status were recognized even by Sunni scholars. Al-Sam’ani visited Imam Musa Kazim’s (A) grave and took resort (tawassul) to him. Abu ‘Ali al-Khallal, a renowned Sunni scholar, mentioned that he visited the Imam’s grave regularly and sought assistance, and his issues would be resolved.
Every year, millions of mourners gather at his shrine to commemorate his martyrdom anniversary, highlighting his endurance, piety, and spiritual greatness.
