Amid rising tensions in the Red Sea, China’s strategic alignment with Yemen has ensured uninterrupted access to the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, while the US struggles to secure trade interests and lift Israel’s naval blockade during its involvement in Yemen’s conflict. As a major global trade player, China has maintained a neutral stance to safeguard its interests, especially in the Red Sea, a crucial region for its Belt and Road Initiative. In contrast, the US faces growing maritime security challenges, raising concerns over a potential clash with China.

Despite investing nearly $5 billion in maritime security, according to The Economist, the US has expressed frustration over the smooth flow of Chinese trade through the region. The magazine reports a two-thirds drop in shipping volume through the strait, with a $200 billion global economic loss in 2024. Meanwhile, Chinese vessels now account for one-fifth of the 800-900 ships passing through the Red Sea each month.

Throughout the crisis, the US pressured China to secure maritime routes. While China supported US-backed UN resolutions, it linked the Gaza war to Red Sea tensions, asserting a ceasefire would resolve the issue. It further refused to impose sanctions on Yemen, to which the US responded by sanctioning Yemeni leaders, Chinese companies, and an individual for supplying missile and drone technology to Yemen, while accusing Iran of backing a Chinese-Yemeni deal to protect Chinese ships.

Israeli media has accused China of supplying advanced weapons to the Yemenis in exchange for safe passage through the Red Sea. US intelligence suggests Yemen has set up a supply chain in China for missile and drone components, with Yemeni officials visiting China for meetings. Israeli reports allege the Houthis plan to manufacture missiles using Chinese components, raising concerns in Gulf countries. The US has provided China with detailed information, including lists of companies involved in the supply chain.

The situation has raised further concerns about the US military’s ability to respond effectively. US Navy warships have had to leave the Red Sea for weeks to resupply with missiles, a challenge exacerbated by Yemeni missile and drone attacks. Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro warned that this situation creates gaps in defense. He emphasized that the issue extends beyond the Red Sea, with potential consequences for a future war with China, particularly if tensions over Taiwan or the South China Sea escalate.

In the event of such a conflict, naval officers agree that China could cut off access to Japanese naval bases, forcing US ships to resupply in Guam or more distant locations. Officers also foresee resupply centers becoming prime targets in war zones, leaving US destroyers and cruisers vulnerable. Del Toro stressed that a future naval conflict with China would necessitate the ability to resupply at sea, with the “TRAM” testing system for at-sea ammunition supply expected to be deployed within two to three years.
