🇮🇶 Report | After Barzani’s visit to Imam Khamenei, the President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, and other Iranian officials initiated significant changes:

• Barzani prohibited any media outlets from promoting or propagating against the Islamic Republic of Iran, with strict penalties announced for violations.
• A majority of anti-Iran elements are being arrested.
• It was revealed that Rouhollah Zam, the figure behind the 2019 riots, was arrested and sent to Iran with the help of Kurdistan.
• Aide to ISIS leader Baghdadi has been arrested, today.

Kurdistan, which had previously allowed anti-Iran elements and Mossad influence, now realizes it cannot progress without Iran. If Barzani has indeed secured backing from Baghdad and Tehran to postpone the upcoming regional elections, the PUK will likely be forced to acquiesce. The KDP is expected to officially announce the outcome of its maneuvering in the coming days. To make full progress, the KDP must pursue further negotiations with the PUK—and possibly grant certain concessions to the Sulaimaniyah-based party. Significantly, such a process will certainly involve both Baghdad and Tehran as well.

If it does end up backing a delay to regional polls, Iran will likely seek to strengthen Erbil’s collaboration on efforts to counter Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in Iraqi Kurdistan. Pursuing warmer ties with Tehran could also help Erbil resolve several outstanding disputes with Baghdad—including the allocations of the Kurdistan Regional Government in the federal budget as well as Baghdad’s commitment to paying salaries in the Kurdistan region.

The US and Israel’s decline post-Al Aqsa war and Iran’s bold attacks have changed the narrative, making countries recognize the necessity of aligning with Iran.

The President of Iraqi Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, met with Imam Khamenei on May 6, 2024. Notably, Barzani was received in Imam Khamenei’s personal room, signaling a fatherly advice rather than a high-level diplomatic meeting. This visit marks a potential shift in Kurdistan’s stance, but skepticism remains given past behaviors.
