EPILEPSY IN FOCUS
π According to the WHO, around 50 million people worldwide π live with epilepsy, and an estimated 5.2 per 1000 people in Ethiopia, making it one of the most common neurological diseases globally
π Nearly 80% of people with epilepsy live in low- and middle-income countries, where access to treatment is often limited.
The public health impact of epilepsy is clear:
β’ Causes recurrent seizures that can lead to injuries, disability, and reduced quality of life.
β’ Associated with increased risks of anxiety, depression, and premature mortality.
β’ Up to 70% of people could live seizure-free with proper treatment , yet many lack access to care.
β’ Social stigma and discrimination often limit education, employment, and social participation.
Together, letβs build health systems that diagnose early, treat effectively, and fight stigma!

π According to the World Health Organization, up to 70% of people living with epilepsy could become seizure-free with appropriate treatment.
π Yet in many low-income countries, about 3 out of 4 people do not receive the treatment they need.
π This treatment gap is a major public health failure.
β’ Preventable seizures increase risk of injury and early death.
β’ Untreated epilepsy limits education and employment opportunities.
β’ Lack of access worsens social stigma and economic hardship.
β’ Primary health care systems can effectively manage most cases , if resources are available.
β¨ Treatment is not a privilege , it is a right.
