EPILEPSY IN FOCUS
Epilepsy is a Global Public Health Concern!

πŸ“Œ According to the WHO, around 50 million people worldwide 🌎 live with epilepsy, and an estimated 5.2 per 1000 people in Ethiopia, making it one of the most common neurological diseases globally

πŸ“Œ Nearly 80% of people with epilepsy live in low- and middle-income countries, where access to treatment is often limited.

The public health impact of epilepsy is clear:

β€’ Causes recurrent seizures that can lead to injuries, disability, and reduced quality of life.
β€’ Associated with increased risks of anxiety, depression, and premature mortality.
β€’ Up to 70% of people could live seizure-free with proper treatment , yet many lack access to care.
β€’ Social stigma and discrimination often limit education, employment, and social participation.

Together, let’s build health systems that diagnose early, treat effectively, and fight stigma!

✨ A healthy society supports people living with epilepsy.

EPILEPSY IN FOCUS
πŸ“’ Epilepsy is Treatable , Access to Care Saves Lives!

πŸ“Œ According to the World Health Organization, up to 70% of people living with epilepsy could become seizure-free with appropriate treatment.

πŸ“Œ Yet in many low-income countries, about 3 out of 4 people do not receive the treatment they need.

πŸ“Œ This treatment gap is a major public health failure.

β€’ Preventable seizures increase risk of injury and early death.
β€’ Untreated epilepsy limits education and employment opportunities.
β€’ Lack of access worsens social stigma and economic hardship.
β€’ Primary health care systems can effectively manage most cases , if resources are available.

✨ Treatment is not a privilege , it is a right.

πŸ“ŒSeizures can look very different from person to person and recognizing the signs can save lives.
The common signs and symptoms of epilepsy include:

β€’ Sudden, uncontrolled jerking movements of the arms and legs (convulsions).
β€’ Temporary confusion, staring spells, or loss of awareness.
β€’ Loss of consciousness or fainting.
β€’ Strange sensations not limited to ingling, dizziness, unusual smells, or visual disturbances.
β€’ Sudden emotional changes such as fear or anxiety without clear reason.
β€’ Stiff muscles or sudden collapse.

Seizures may last from a few seconds to a few minutes and recovery can involve fatigue, confusion, or headache.

Key prevention strategies include:

β€’ Preventing head injuries (road safety, workplace safety).
β€’ Ensuring quality prenatal and birth care.
β€’ Preventing and treating brain infections.
β€’ Controlling cardiovascular risk factors like stroke.
