๐ŸŒŸGrowth through Empowerment๐ŸŒŸ
We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of our intensive 4-week Life Skills Training program for second-year students at Addis Ababa University (AAU)!

In a powerful collaboration with the YeBen Endowment Fund, SCOPH-AA designed this comprehensive training to foster holistic personal development and equip students with essential skills for navigating their academic and personal lives effectively.

The program focused on four critical pillars crucial for student well-being and success:

โค๏ธ Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH): Promoting informed decision-making and responsible health practices.

๐Ÿง  Mental Health Awareness: Destigmatizing conversations and providing coping mechanisms for stress and academic pressure.

๐Ÿšซ Substance Abuse Prevention: Educating on risks and fostering resilience against harmful habits.

โœจ Self-Care Strategies: Highlighting the importance of personal well-being, balance, and establishing healthy routines.

This initiative wasn't just a series of lecturesโ€”it was an insightful, interactive, and transformative experience aimed at providing these deserving students with the much-needed practical and emotional toolkit to thrive in today's dynamic world. We believe that investing in these foundational life skills is paramount to creating a healthier, more capable future generation.

๐Ÿ’Š Antimicrobial Resistance

๐Ÿ“ƒAntimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is when germs change and medicines like antibiotics stop working. This makes infections like pneumonia, TB, and sepsis harder and sometimes impossible to treat.

๐ŸŒGlobally, AMR was directly linked to 1.27 million deaths in 2019, and 1 in 6 infections is already resistant to available antibiotics in 2025.

โš ๏ธThis is a serious threat to our health because AMR puts many of the gains of modern medicine at risk. It makes infections harder to treat and makes other medical procedures and treatments โ€“ such as surgery, caesarean sections and cancer chemotherapy much riskier.

What can you do?

โœ… Only take antibiotics prescribed by a doctor.
โœ…Never share or use leftover antibiotics.
โœ…Always finish the full course, even if you feel better.
โœ…Prevent infections by washing hands regularly.

โœจlet's protect our medicines for the future!

Since 1988, communities have stood together on World AIDS Day to show strength and solidarity against HIV stigma and to remember lives lost.

๐Ÿ”Š This year's theme is "Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response", calling for sustained political leadership, international cooperation, and human-rights-centred approaches to end AIDS by 2030.

We honor the resilience of those living with the virus, and we pay tribute to the lives lost.

๐ŸŽ—๏ธSCOPH-AA is preparing a special series of posts to mark this important day in our public health calendar to help break the stigma and spread awareness.

๐Ÿ“ข Gender-Based Violence is a Public Health Emergency! ๐Ÿšจ

According to the World Health Organization, violence against women remains devastatingly pervasive with about 1 in 3 women has been subjected to physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime.

This is not just a violation of human rights; it is a critical public health crisis.

The public health dimensions of GBV are clear:

โ€ขLeads to injuries, unwanted pregnancies, induced abortions, STIs (including HIV), and maternal health complications.
โ€ข Increases risks of depression, PTSD, anxiety, sleep disorders, and suicide.
โ€ข Contributes to chronic conditions and affects health and development, perpetuating intergenerational cycles of violence.

Together, letโ€™s build health systems that heal, protect, and empower!

โœจA Healthy society is one free from violence.

Today, our SCORA AA team successfully completed the second phase of our Pad Distribution Project at the One-Stop Center, Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
We delivered the collected sanitary pads, purchased pad packs, and donated clothes to support survivors of sexual violence who receive psychological, medical, and legal services at the center.

The One-Stop Center plays a vital role in caring for girls and boys affected by sexual abuse, and they are continuously in need of pads, clothes, and detergents. By sharing this, we aim to raise awareness and encourage others to support their essential work.

This activity is proudly part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed, all student donors, and Dr. Ismail, the coordinator of the One-Stop Center at Gandhi branch, for welcoming us and guiding the visit.

Together, we continue to advocate, support, and stand for SRHR and GBV prevention.
