🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we as SCOPH-AA are joining the global effort to raise awareness, promote early detection, and support patients living with breast cancer.

According to WHO (2023):

📊 Breast cancer is the most common cancer globally, with 2.3 million new cases and 685,000 deaths in 2020.

📊 Mortality remains high in low- and middle-income countries due to late diagnosis and limited access to treatment.

🇪🇹 Breast cancer is the leading cancer among Ethiopian women, accounting for up to 33% of all female cancers (BMC Cancer 2024; National Guideline 2024).

🌍 World Anaesthesia Day 2025 | SCOPH-AA 🇪🇹

Theme: Anesthesiology in Health Emergencies

On October 16, 1846, Dr. William T. G. Morton demonstrated ether anaesthesia in Boston, allowing Dr. John Collins Warren to perform the first painless surgery , a breakthrough that marked the birth of modern anaesthesia.

🇪🇹 In Ethiopia:

Anaesthesia began to progress in 1974 G.C. with the opening of the first School of Anaesthesia at Tikur Anbessa Hospital. Despite advances, challenges persist:

📊81% of anaesthetists face unsafe working conditions

📊83% work without assistants

📊55% of hospitals lack essential monitoring equipment


✨ Today, we honor our anaesthesia professionals, residents and nurse-anaestghesiologists and call for better training, and safer conditions.

Safe anaesthesia is a right, not a privilege.

"Development of a Biomarker for Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease (DREAMCARE)", a research in collaboration with Cardiac Center at TASH is looking for study participants. This is a great opportunity to add yet another discovery to the world of medicine.

All you have to do:
- Give a short medical history
- Give two drops of blood
- Screening echocardiography to confirm you do not have heart disease

Date: Thursday October 23, 2025
Place: TASH, Echo room

Total time it will take is around 15 minutes only.

❓ What Is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer occurs when abnormal breast cells grow uncontrollably, forming a tumour that can spread to other parts of the body if untreated.

🧬 Where It Begins:

🔬 Most cases start in the milk ducts (ductal carcinoma) or lobules (lobular carcinoma).

🔬 When cells invade nearby tissue or travel through blood or lymph vessels, the cancer becomes invasive or metastatic.

⚕️ In Ethiopia 🇪🇹 (BMC Cancer, 2024):

📊Ductal carcinoma: 80–90% of cases
📊Estrogen receptor–positive (ER⁺): ~65% , cancer cells grow in response to estrogen; respond well to hormonal therapy such as Tamoxifen
📊Triple-negative: 15–20% , lacks hormone receptors; often more aggressive and affects younger women

💊 Treatment (WHO, CDC, Ethiopia 2024):
Combination of
Surgery (mastectomy or breast-conserving)
Radiation therapy
Chemotherapy / Hormonal / Targeted therapy

🩺. When detected early, over 90% of breast cancers are curable.

Breast Cancer: A Global 🌎 & Ethiopian 🇪🇹 Perspective

📊2.3 million women were diagnosed and
670 000 died from breast cancer in 2022 (WHO).
📊It is the MOST COMMON cancer in women.
🧮HALF of all cases occur in women with no risk factors other than age and sex.
♂️Around 0.5–1 % of cases occur in MEN.

SURVIVAL DEPENDS ON ACCESS: Mortality is higher in low-income countries

🔘High-Income nations: 1 in 12 women diagnosed, 1 in 71 die.
🔘Low-Income nations: 1 in 27 diagnosed, 1 in 48 die.
Survival rate:
> 90% in high-income countries
< 40% in many African nations (WHO, 2024)

🇪🇹 IN ETHIOPIA:

🧮Leading cancer among women.
📊Represents about ONE-THIRD of female cancers and over 9,000 deaths each year.
🩺60 % + diagnosed at late stages (III–IV).
🔘Median age at diagnosis: 40–46 years — YOUNGER than the global average.

Together against Breast Cancer!

RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS OF BREAST CANCER
🩺 Awareness begins with knowing your body.

Common Symptoms :
🔎A lump or swelling in the breast, upper chest, or armpit
🔎Changes in size or shape of one breast
🔎Skin changes such as dimpling, puckering, or thickening
🔎Redness or darker discoloration of the breast
🔎Nipple changes – pulled in (inverted) or crusting/rash around it
🔎Unusual discharge from either nipple
🔎Persistent pain in the breast or armpit (though pain alone isn’t always a sign)

🧬 Symptoms can appear differently on various skin tones.

🇪🇹 Over 80% of Ethiopian women with breast cancer first notice a breast lump or swelling.

REMEMBER TO :

👉T – TOUCH your breasts regularly to feel for lumps or thickening.
👉 L – LOOK in the mirror for visible changes (shape, size, color, skin texture).
👉C – CHECK with a health professional if anything feels or looks different.
