April 11 | World ๐ŸŒŽ Parkinson's Day

Parkinsonโ€™s disease (PD) is progressive, meaning symptoms get worse over time.

Common symptoms include:
I.Motor:
๐Ÿ”ธSlow movement
๐Ÿ”ธTremors
๐Ÿ”ธRigidity
๐Ÿ”ธBalance problems
๐Ÿ”ธInvoluntary movement

II.Non-motor:
๐Ÿ”ปDementia
๐Ÿ”ปAnxiety & depression
๐Ÿ”ปSleep disorders
๐Ÿ”ปPain & sensory issues

PD often leads to disability and the need for long-term care.
It typically affects older adults, but younger people can be affected too.

We must push for better awareness, diagnosis, and careโ€”especially in low-resource settings.

Parkinsonโ€™s Treatment: Managing, Not Curing

๐Ÿ’ŠThereโ€™s still no cure for Parkinsonโ€™s disease but there are treatments that can reduce symptoms and improve quality of life

๐ŸฅผThese therapies boost mobility, independence, and reduce stress on caregivers.

โš•๏ธBut access isnโ€™t equal. In many low- and middle-income countries, including parts of Ethiopia ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น, essential medicines and therapies remain unaffordable or unavailable.

We must push for better access to careโ€”everywhere.

Parkinsonโ€™s in Ethiopia๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น: A Silent Struggle

๐Ÿงฎ Globally the prevalence of PD has doubled in the past 25 years, but in Ethiopia, itโ€™s under recognized.

๐Ÿ“In Ethiopia ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น, the incidence rate is estimated at just 1.3 per 100,000 (2018) .
This is likely underreported. Compare this with:

๐Ÿ“UK: 16.5 per 100,000
๐Ÿ“Japan: 183.9 per 100,000
๐Ÿ“Nigeria: 3.3 per 100,000

Why is this important?
โ™ฆ๏ธLack of awareness, limited diagnostic access, and low reporting may hide the real burden
โ™ฆ๏ธMany patients go undiagnosed until symptoms are severe
โ™ฆ๏ธIn Ethiopia๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น, we face more than just motor symptoms.

๐Ÿ“‹A 2020 study found that 79.5% of Ethiopian PD patients suffer from distressing fatigue, one of the highest rates globally.

Letโ€™s shine a light on Parkinsonโ€™s in Ethiopiaโ€”because every patient deserves to be seen.
