World 🌎 Health Day Campaign

Beyond Survival – Dignity, Healing, and Hope‍⚕️‍🍼

Saving lives is the first step—but true care goes further.

1. Respectful care for all
Care should be dignified, empathetic, and include support for those facing miscarriage or stillbirth.
Training & counselling make a difference.

2. Don’t stop at delivery
🩺Up to 1 in 3 women suffer long-term complications after birth.

🩺1 in 5 experience postpartum depression or anxiety.
We need integrated care that includes mental, physical & social support.

3. Family friendly = life friendly
Maternity leave and legal protection support help moms heal and thrive.

4. Educate girls, empower women
Keeping girls in school reduces overall suffering.
Empowered women = healthier families and brighter futures.

April 11| World 🌎 Parkinson's Day

What is Parkinson’s disease 🧠?

📝 Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive neurological condition that affects the brain’s ability to control movement.

📝 It’s caused by the loss of dopamine-producing cells in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra, which is responsible for voluntary movement. As dopamine levels drop, communication between the brain and body becomes disrupted.

Key facts:
🔑Named after Dr. James Parkinson, who described it in 1817
🔑Symptoms worsen over time
🔑More common with age, but can affect younger adults
🔑Slightly more common in men than women

What causes it?
The exact cause is still unknown. Possible factors include:
Genetics in some families
Environmental exposure to toxins or pesticides (research ongoing)

Stay with us as we continue to share more about Parkinson’s and its impact.

April 11 | World 🌎 Parkinson's Day

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is progressive, meaning symptoms get worse over time.

Common symptoms include:
I.Motor:
🔸Slow movement
🔸Tremors
🔸Rigidity
🔸Balance problems
🔸Involuntary movement

II.Non-motor:
🔻Dementia
🔻Anxiety & depression
🔻Sleep disorders
🔻Pain & sensory issues

PD often leads to disability and the need for long-term care.
It typically affects older adults, but younger people can be affected too.

We must push for better awareness, diagnosis, and care—especially in low-resource settings.

Parkinson’s Treatment: Managing, Not Curing

💊There’s still no cure for Parkinson’s disease but there are treatments that can reduce symptoms and improve quality of life

🥼These therapies boost mobility, independence, and reduce stress on caregivers.

⚕️But access isn’t equal. In many low- and middle-income countries, including parts of Ethiopia 🇪🇹, essential medicines and therapies remain unaffordable or unavailable.

We must push for better access to care—everywhere.

Parkinson’s in Ethiopia🇪🇹: A Silent Struggle

🧮 Globally the prevalence of PD has doubled in the past 25 years, but in Ethiopia, it’s under recognized.

📝In Ethiopia 🇪🇹, the incidence rate is estimated at just 1.3 per 100,000 (2018) .
This is likely underreported. Compare this with:

📝UK: 16.5 per 100,000
📝Japan: 183.9 per 100,000
📝Nigeria: 3.3 per 100,000

Why is this important?
♦️Lack of awareness, limited diagnostic access, and low reporting may hide the real burden
♦️Many patients go undiagnosed until symptoms are severe
♦️In Ethiopia🇪🇹, we face more than just motor symptoms.

📋A 2020 study found that 79.5% of Ethiopian PD patients suffer from distressing fatigue, one of the highest rates globally.

Let’s shine a light on Parkinson’s in Ethiopia—because every patient deserves to be seen.
