What an informative, engaging and inspiring training!!!

We are losing many people due to a lack of immediate basic life support in times of need.

Had there been enough trained forces to give basic life support, there could have been a significant reduction in deaths.

SCOPH-AA has started the journey of equipping medical students with these skills today. About 35 medical students have received first aid training.

This is just the beginning. We will have more sessions on the topic.

I would love to pass on my deepest gratitude to Doctor Tmesegen Beyene and Doctor Segni Kejela for giving us this insightful training.

Hakim Workneh Eshete also known as Charles Martin (21 Oct, 1864 โ€“ 9 Oct, 1952) was the 1st Ethiopian educated medical doctor. He was born in Gondar, the son of Negadras Eshete Woldemariam. In 1868, the confusion of the capture of Magdala, he was separated from his parents and found by the British soldiers. Colonel Charles Chamberlain took him until his death in 1871, after which Workneh went to the mission school where Colonel Martin paid for his education. Workneh was grateful enough to both Colonels thus he took the name "Charles Martin".
He enrolled at the Lahore Medical College in 1877 and graduated in 1882. He performed two years of practice as an assistant surgeon, then travelled to Scotland where he received certificates in medicine and surgery.
When Dr. Charles Martin heard of the Italian invasion of his homeland in 1896, he attempted to return to Ethiopia.
He arrived in Ethiopia in late 1899 and had pitched a tent in the center of Addis Ababa, where he began to treat patients free of charge.
