π§‘On world hypertension day SCOPH-AA wants to share with you something about hypertension.
π§‘Hypertension is a condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high. Most of the time it is a condition that is linked with the lifestyle of people. The normal average blood pressure for an adult person is usually 120/80 mm Hg.When a person's blood pressure is above 140/90mm Hg, it can be defined as hypertension.
π§‘Most of the time age and obesity are the disposing factors for hypertension, genetics also plays a role for hypertension.
π§‘Hypertension affects more than 30% of the adult population worldwide, approximately more than one billion people are affected around the world. For Africa hypertension is high with about 46% of adults aged 25 years and older being hypertensive. In our country Ethiopia, the epidemiology of hypertension is not well studied,But some studies showed that its prevalence ranges from 1.8% in rural communities to 30% in urban areas.
πΈHypertension often has no symptoms. Over time, if untreated, it can be the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, especially coronary heart disease and stroke, but also for chronic kidney disease, heart failure, arrhythmia and dementia.
πΈThings that can increase the risk of getting hypertension are being overweight, eating too much salt and not eating enough fruit and vegetables, not doing enough exercise, drinking too much alcohol or coffee(or other caffeine-based drinks),smoking
and stressing alot.
πΈHypertension can often be prevented or reduced by eating a healthy diet which includes fruits and vegetables, maintaining a healthy weight(not being obese),taking regular exercises, not drinking too much alcohol, not smoking and managing stress.
