💻 How to become an Embedded Software Engineer?

Due to a big knowledge base needed, entering this particular engineering field can seem daunting.

By the end of this article hopefully, you will know where to start, how to plan and how to proceed in order to become an embedded software engineer.

The reason behind the fact that the knowledge base needed to develop embedded systems is vast is that there are lots of branches to embedded software engineering:
▫️ Embedded bare-metal software development
▫️ Embedded Linux Software development
▫️ Embedded RTOS software development
▫️ Embedded Networking software development

Although each branch needs a unique set of skills, some skills are common to all:
▫️ Good mastery of C and C++ programming
▫️ Basics of Electronics
▫️ Basic knowledge about Microcontrollers
▫️ Debugging skills using oscilloscope and logic analyzers
▫️ Version management software like Git
▫️ Basics of Operating Systems

📟 IBoard! Web-controlled Whiteboard

The idea of the project is to create an erasable whiteboard that could write and draw in real time via a web interface and therefore also from a smartphone.

"The project that I want to present I have realized entirely by myself from the mechanics to the control software. In life I make the web programmer and I have thought to exploit this knowledge by applying them to the robotics world.

I modeled every single piece of mechanics, I printed it in 3D with my Davinci 3D, assembled the electronics part and finally developed the control software, it was a wonderful experience for me that gave me the opportunity to understand best of all the production process of a real prototype."

The article is organized in macro-sections:
▫️ Components
▫️ Working logic
▫️ Mechanical project
▫️ Electronics
▫️ Software

🔌 Latching Power Switch Circuit (Auto Power Off Circuit) for ESP32, ESP8266, Arduino

In this article we’ll show you how to build a Latching Power Switch Circuit, also know as an Auto Power Off Circuit. You can use this circuit to auto-power off the ESP32, ESP8266, Arduino, or any other microcontroller.

This circuit allows you to cut off power completely when the microcontroller is not executing any task. In other words, as soon as the microcontroller finishes executing a task it turns itself off via software. This is a great way to make batteries last longer in your electronics projects.

📟 Watchy: Arduino-compatible watch uses an ESP32 microcontroller and an e-ink display

Watchy is an open source product that uses an ESP32, an E-ink display, and costs about $50. The display is 1.5 inches — good enough for a watch — and it has a real time clock, a vibration motor, an accelerometer, and four buttons. The whole thing runs on a 200 mAh lithium polymer battery. The charger is microUSB and you can also upload software to it using the usual Arduino tools.

Unlike a normal Arduino program, all the work in a typical Watchy program happens in setup() so the watch can mostly sleep and it updates the 200×200 typically just once a minute. As an example, [Stephan] wrote a watch face that uses an old Irish alphabet to tell time. He plans to add code to grab online data, too, and the phone has support for connecting wirelessly and parsing JSON to make tasks like that easier.

🤖 ESP32 notifying about Motion Detected through Telegram Bot

This tutorial shows how to send notifications to your Telegram account when the ESP32 detects motion. As long as you have access to the internet in your smartphone, you’ll be notified no matter where you are.

Here’s an overview on how the project works:
▫️ You’ll create a Telegram bot for your ESP32.
▫️ The ESP32 is connected to a PIR motion sensor.
▫️ When the sensor detects motion, the ESP32 sends a warning message to your telegram account.
▫️ You’ll be notified in your Telegram account whenever motion is detected.

This is a simple project, but shows how you can use Telegram in your IoT and Home Automation projects. The idea is to apply the concepts learned in your own projects.
