Starting your ESL lesson in the right way can set the tone for the entire day. Jumping straight into a difficult topic can leave learners feeling overwhelmed and unengaged with their learning. Thatβs why ESL warm up activities are so important. They help learners get their brains into action.

Question relay
This is a fast-paced, very simple warm up activity that is easily adapted for different topics. All you have to do is pick a topic, usually one youβve been covering in class, and set yourself a time limit, maybe 60 seconds. Then start by asking a learner a question on that topic, for example, βwhatβs your favourite sport?β. The learner then answers your question, then asks another question on the same topic to another learner. The point of this game is to ask and answer questions fast. See how many you can get through in your allotted time, and make it into an ongoing competition as you cover different topics, challenging your class to beat your record. This works well with your small class as learners have less time to come up with new questions before it comes back round to them, making it more of a challenge.
If your class needs inspiration before they get started, they could use these conversation cards.

Question scramble
Write out a question on the board based on what youβll be covering in that lesson. For example, if youβre going to be learning about pets, you could write βwhat noise does a dog make?β. But scramble up the words so that theyβre not in the correct order- the longer the sentence, the harder the challenge for learners. Then set learners a certain amount of time to try and unscramble the sentence and put it back in the right order. This is a fun way to introduce the lesson.

Another academic year is about to be over and, I am sure, these days most of you are having either progress tests or review lessons. So I thought you might find the article Review Session Games That Work. By Matt Kuykendall published at www.edutopia.org useful. Reading professional articles is something I enjoy doing as it helps me keep up-to-date with the latest trends in English language teaching.
If you happen to have any interesting articles to share, feel free to do it in the comments or in our eltcomments group.
P.S. By the way, edutopia is one of my favourite websites. I am going to post a review about it. Stay tuned π€
