We had a whale of a time at sessions by Dr Marcus Bridle, Course Coordinator and EAP Tutor. Learner motivation, needs analysis, learning styles were all familiar concepts, but this time we looked at them from a different perspective. I discovered something surprising π€©π. I'll tell about it a it later π. As for now, I would like you to try out a questionnaire and find out your learning style. Follow this link π The VARK Questionnaire and tick the boxes. You can choose more than one answer for each question. Click "OK" at the end and you will get the result. Write in the comments what your learning style is, OK?

Hello everyone! Let's continue the discussion about learning styles. Thank you for all your responses, appreciate it greatly. But, I'd like you to do one more thing π. Think about these questions π
Do you think the results are valid? Do they really show what kind of learner you are?
Having answered the questions, watch the video below. It will reveal "the biggest myth in education" π€.
P.S. The video is from my favourite YouTube channel called Veritasium

Most of our lessons were in the form of discussion and sharing ideas. Here are some practical things shared by our brilliant colleagues at "Teaching IELTS" session.
Diana: Put students into groups. Cut the speaking/writing band descriptors table into pieces. Ask students to read the descriptors and match them to the score.
This activity will help analyze the assessment criteria for speaking/writing in greater detail. Your students will be able to understand the difference between band score 5 and 7, for example.
Sultan: Students work in pairs. Partners will need to sit facing each other, one with a blank sheet of paper and the other with a text for Writing Task 1 held so that their partner canβt see it. The student with the text dictates to their partner what to draw.
The activity is good because:
π It involves many skills.
π It is collaborative.
π It is a great way to review the sentence structure and vocabulary for Writing Task 1.
Zuhra: Students conduct a survey in the class asking each other questions. (I'll put an example of a survey below). Set a time limit. When the time runs out, students go back to their seats and draw a bar chart showing the results of the survey. You can ask them to write a description of the chart using vocabulary for Writing Task 1.
Marcus: "Just a minute". Write 6 topics on the board or ask your students to offer them. For example, 1. Food, 2. Sport, 3. Technology, etc. Divide the class into groups. Give each group a dice π². One member from a group throws the dice and identifies the topic, e.g. if they throw 2, the topic is "Sport". Then one of the students starts talking on the topic, but there are some rules:
π² No hesitation
π² No repetition
π² No deviation (the speaker must stay on topic)
Tell the students that they have only one minute to talk. Whenever the speaker breaks one of the rules somebody from the group should interrupt him saying "Stop!" and continue to talk. The last person to talk is the winner π.
This activity is great for developing fluency. You can adapt it for lower levels by asking them to say words or phrases.

Ways to divide students into groups:
π Students can draw from a paper bag slips of paper with groups numbers written on them.
π Just for fun, use tape to attach puzzle pieces to the bottoms of students' chairs while they are out of the room. Each set of puzzle pieces must be pieced together to identify a group. A puzzle should be designed to provide the number of pieces necessary for the desired group size. For example, if groups of four is desired, cut out shapes (circle, triangle, etc.), then cut each shape into four pieces, with edges that can be identified as fitting together.
π Randomly pass out wrapped hard candies (if groups of three are desired, use three green, three peppermint-striped, three orange candies, etc.) Students match candies to form their groups and begin their interaction by eating the candies.
π Play musical chairs. The students will form groups with the desired number of members as they are "out" of the game.

My journey at Manchester Metropolitan finished a week ago but I still have that feeling of gratitude to this wonderful team of trainers from Language Center. Richard, Tim, Marcus and Emma were so attentive, supportive and enthusiastic that we all wanted this learning adventure to last an eternity π€©ππ€π€. They look gorgeous wearing these caps, don't they?

Ask students to assess their academic strengths and weaknesses to determine in which content areas they need help and in which areas they feel capable of helping others. You may ask students to create their own assessment sheet in the following way: fold a sheet of paper in half vertically and list help that can be given one side and help needed on the other.
Assessment sheets then could be torn in half, turned in to a class-appointed committee to be sorted into stacks of "Help Available" and "Help Needed".
A class list could then be made and posted to allow students to ask for and offer help as stated on the list. A time would need to be set aside for the help sessions.
Some teacher guidance would be needed for the initial pairing and planning.

These PowerPoint lessons πare designed with young learners in mind, and take about 20 minutes to complete. If you have an in person class, you could extend the class with a vocabulary race; say a word and ask students to race to touch the correct picture (two at a time!)
Hurry up they are free this week only!
