You can use this text for independent work for your ninth grade students. I think the level of the text will fit your 9th grade learners' level.
The text is from www.ducksters.com
And if you have the internet connection in the classroom, there is a quiz based on the text on the website

The activity I did today with my 9th grade students can be adapted to any other text. I am going to talk about "Reading Stations", an interesting activity that will turn your class into a dynamic learning process.
Do you remember the text about US political parties that I posted a few days ago? Well, I divided it into several parts and hung them in different parts of the classroom.
like this πŸ‘†
Then I wrote ten questions on the blackboard and asked the students to copy them out. When they finished writing I told them to go round the classroom and find answers to those questions.
Having made sure that students are done with the task I allowed them to choose questions randomly. That is instead of going through the answers in succession (i.e. 1, 2, 3 ...) I let them choose the question they would like to answer. I could engage my shy and less confident students in this way.
We also worked with some important vocabulary. I told my students to pay attention to the words in bold. This time we did some listening practice. I read the definitions for those words and students identified which word is being defined.
What other reading activities do you know? Please share in the comments πŸ˜„
