“The technologies now exist,” said Paul Shattuck, company director for Directed Energy Systems. “They can be packaged into a size, weight, power and thermal which can be fit onto relevant tactical platforms, whether it’s a ship, whether it’s a ground vehicle or whether it’s an airborne platform.

The Air Force of the Future: Lasers on Fighter Jets, Planes That Think
“So everything exists today,” he said, “it’s just a question of the desire and when is that going to occur.”
Added Daniel Miller, Senior Fellow for Air Vehicle Science and Systems with Lockheed’s Skunk Works division, “the question is moving from, ‘Do we have the devices?’ to ‘How quickly can we integrate them on the platform?’ The question has changed dramatically on the last decade.”
In essence, it’s no longer a technological problem to make laser weapons work. It’s one of integration at the service level.
Asked flatly if the services came to them tomorrow and asked for a laser weapon in the 30 KW range to be delivered, the two men, along with Robert Afzal, a senior fellow with Laser and Sensor Systems, agreed they could produce a viable weapon for fielding.
That doesn’t mean that giant city-melting lasers are on their way. Right now, the weapons are limited to the 15-30 KW scale; going much further requires figuring out how to deal with atmospheric interference, an issue which becomes more complicated with weapons mounted on airborne systems.
But a 30 KW weapon can still bore a hole through a two inch piece of steel in seconds, said Shattuck, which is enough to disable an incoming rocket or hit the engine of a pickup truck. For the Pentagon, that is particularly key, as it has openly talked about the costs associated with using kinetic weapons to attack small trucks operated by the Islamic State group, commonly known as ISIS or ISIL.
The company has already proven the capabilities of a 30KW weapon with its Athena demonstrator, which last year conducted a series of tests on small unmanned systems from over a mile away. The weapon was able to identify and disable those systems with great accuracy, down to taking out just a leg of a system or blinding its camera.
A number of advancements in recent years have allowed the company to move forward with laser technology, but the biggest one is the movement in fiber-laser technology, which is largely driven from developments in the commercial sector.
The men described the technology as similar to a rack of servers. Once you figure out how to connect them all, you can add more power by adding another server. The same is true for the laser weapons: you add more power slots into the rack and increase its power.

JESD204B over optical fiber enables new architecture for phased-array
radar
Traditional phased-array antennas rely on analog methods to steer the
beam. This article describes how JESD204B over an optical interface
could be used to implement a digital-control architecture in phased-
array antennas, which has the potential to increase beam precision and
reduce transceiver size and lower power consumption.

NASA Explores Supersonic Airliner—Or Will It Be a Spy Plane?
NASA is making moves to start work on a new X-plane, a half-scale flying version of a supersonic airliner named the QueSST (for Quiet Supersonic Technology).
NASA is making moves to start work on a new X-plane, a half-scale flying version of a supersonic airliner named the QueSST (for Quiet Supersonic Technology).
NASA is making moves to start work on a new X-plane, a half-scale flying version of a supersonic airliner. Named the QueSST (for Quiet Supersonic Technology), it will be designed and built by engineers and technicians at Lockheed Martin, GE Aviation, and Tri Models Inc. The first steps will be to develop baseline requirements and a preliminary design, while aerospace engineers try to reduce the sonic boom and make sure the aircraft’s noise signature will be acceptable to communities. Prototypes won’t begin flying until around 2020.
It’s hard to believe that one of NASA’s top priorities is supersonic travel for the public and that it thinks spending $20 million, the cost of the preliminary design work, is the best use of taxpayer-provided funds. Surely if “quiet” supersonic airliners are possible, it’s up to the major aircraft makers to do the research and shoulder the costs. Then they can enjoy the profits, if there are any. (It’s said that the Concorde SST earned the French and British some returns during its 30-year life, but overall was a money loser.)
And how will they validate the community response to a, quieter supersonic design? Surely they would have to build a full-scale “quiet” plane, fly it at supersonic speeds across the country, and then take public comments. I can almost guarantee there will be many vehemently negative ones, unless the plane is totally quiet to those of us on the ground throughout its entire flight envelope.
It’s also hard to imagine the environmentalists among us would approve of burning more petroleum-based fuel and injecting more CO2 into the atmosphere. And are there really that many well-heeled folks who need to get somewhere really fast and are willing to pay the freight? There’s a reason the British and French haven’t built a follow-up to the Concorde.
All of this leads to the sneaking suspicion that the QueSST project will eventually disappear and soon thereafter the military will be secretly flying a new high-speed, manned spy plane, the successor to the SR-71, another aircraft designed and built by Lockheed. After all, a half-sized airliner would be capable of packing in a lot of recon gear, and hypersonic speeds would let it outrun most anti-aircraft missiles.
Rumors abound as to the mission of the NASA-built X-37. One of the most believable is that it now refuels and maintains spy satellites.
It reminds me of the X-37, a NASA X-plane built around 2001. Putatively, it was going to serve as an unmanned hypersonic testbed for reusable ways to put satellites in orbit, recover, and service them. It was launched like an X-15—dropped by a mothership, then it zoomed up into orbit where it could stay for up to 21 days powered by its solar cells, then return to Earth and land on a runway like a plane. In 2004, the program was ended when the aircraft was transferred to Darpa. Rumors abound as to its mission. One of the most believable is that it now refuels and maintains spy satellites. It’s also rumored that two more XC-37s have been built and are flying secret missions.
Of course, all this speculation might be just that—speculation. And the X-37s are working on more palatable frozen food for a manned Mars mission and we’ll all be flying to Disneyland at Mach 2 in 10 years.

Face Recognition Start-up Says It Can Identify Terrorists
By Sydny Shepard
An Israeli start-up has signed a contract with homeland security to help identify everything from terrorists to geniuses using facial recognition software.
Faception can analyze faces from video streams (recorded or live), cameras or online/offline databases, encode the faces in proprietary image descriptors and match an individual with various personality traits.
The start-up has built 15 different classifiers, which evaluate with 80 percent accuracy certain traits. The start-up believes the software can look at a person's face and realize character traits that are undetectable to the human eye. Using the traits found, they can determine if the person is a terrorist, extrovert, pedophile or even a white-collar criminal.

Title: Practical Antenna Design for Advanced Wireless Products
Date: June 14, 2016
Time: 8am PT/ 11am ET
Sponsored by: National Instruments
Presented by: Henry Lau, Lexiwave Technology
Abstract:
Antenna performance plays a critical role in determining the communication range and quality of service for wireless products. As devices must increasingly support challenging spectral requirements (wideband or multi-band) and small product size, design becomes crucial to the success of new wireless products. Competence in advanced antenna design strengthens the competitive edge of such products for their manufacturers.
This webinar offers participants technical insights into the vital aspects of antenna design from an industrial and practical perspective. It covers fundamental theory, concepts and definitions of the features, specifications and performance of different types of commonly-used and advanced antennas found in wireless products. Simulation results on some design examples will be discussed. Practical implementation strategies and approaches to overall product design for optimum antenna performance will also be presented.
