OPINION PIECE: The Gardai are looking for recruits. Normally that is not a problem,reasonable pay,early retirement and an unarmed force that doesn’t experience the violence that other European forces sometimes do. So all in all a good job. But this time round they are not recruiting in the usual places. A recruitment delegation has recently been sent to the Mosney Direct Provision Centre in Co Meath. The purpose is to create a multicultural Garda force that is more reflective of the make up of current Irish society. In theory people from the EU could always apply to become a Garda but few did. But now a ‘Candidate Information Booklet’ for the 2023 campaign has been released. As well as the usual requirements of good character there is an additional category ‘A refugee or a family member of such a person in relation to whome a refugee declaration is in force’. In effect this means that any refugee or person claiming International Protection can now apply to join the Gardai. While the good character clause still remains how can that realistically be tested. The clock must start from when they first arrived in Ireland. If I were an unvetted male of military age would I not consider this job to be ideal. In effect I vet myself as I control the narrative of my past. Nothing can be cross checked and as the Department of Justice is attempting to fast track multiculturalism in the Gardai does this not mean that those with a criminal or violent pass will slip through. Nobody will know because nobody can know and I suspect those in authority don’t care. It is the end point that counts,multiculturalism. The great strength of the Gardai was discretion,a community police force from the community knew families and their individual struggles. Just the right amount of coercion could be applied to keep volatile people on the straight and narrow. Frank O Connors wonderful short story ‘The Majesty of the Law’ brings out the concept of understanding and compassion combined with discretion. Community policing at its best and typical of generations of Gardai. But now the good will,the sense of community policing may well be replaced by a hostile gendarmerie,composed of unvetted males from cultures that know nothing of us and we know nothing of them. No discretion,no compassion,no proportionality and no allowances made for our culture. I suspect in this recruitment drive Irish people
may apply but no Irish need apply because if a choice has to be made between an ordinary eager decent Irish person with an unblemished record and an unvetted male migrant the selection process will be a foregone conclusion. Another part of our history,our identity,our way of life is set to disappear as the familiar helpful Garda is about to be replaced by culturally inappropriate males about whose backgrounds we know and can know nothing. There was never a national debate on multiculturalism,the electorate was never asked by way of referendum. Opinion was never sought. This is a top down policy with little grass root support. Our identity is been weakened and eroded with the passage of each week and with the arrival of another bunch of unvetted males. This must stop before it is too late,close the borders to the undocumented and those without valid reasons to to be here. Put Ireland first.

it seems, all the real trouble to our people started back in 1939 with the emergency power act and they had been extending and changing that act that should have finished after a year of coming into operation... but nope.. it was only looked at again in the 70's but they in power kept it going. Firstly my belief is, this act should never had been allowed in the first place. But the first amendment done without referendum , made it so.. so it should have made it repugnant to our constitution... bunreacht na héiReann 1937 in cló gaélach.. also my question would be... how many of these acts had actually been written in our first principle text cló gaélach... we need to revoke, the first amendment and call it out for what it was. WRONG. éiRe was not in a state of war, during world war two, because we were neutral... and the article on state war in our constitution, originally stated, éiRe herself needed to be at war, which we were not... So this whole thing, opened a can of worms for tyranny to raise its ugly head on this island....

Sir, – Diarmaid Ferriter ("Exiting a new emergency, 75 years on", Opinion & Analysis, May 8th) notes that the emergency powers introduced on the outbreak of the second World War continued to be used for some time afterwards, and wonders how long the present emergency legislation will be kept.
The 1939 state of emergency was only repealed in 1976 – and was immediately replaced by a fresh state of emergency invoking conflict in Northern Ireland. That situation lasted until 1995, so at least we had some break from emergencies before the current pandemic. – Yours, etc,
